Welcome to Githens Middle School!  I am looking forward to a year of growth and learning with
our Raiders. If at any time you need to contact me please use the information above.

This school year we will use Canvas as the primary place for information, instruction,
and assignments. The website listed above can also be found on the Spartan team
website. This syllabus will adjust accordingly as we progress throughout the school
year. Please check Canvas, the team website, and the Githens website frequently for
updates.

PRIDE Expectations
Here at GMS, we expect the best from our students both behaviorally and academically. We
utilize a school-wide positive behavior system called PRIDE in order to reinforce and reward

Homework
Students will have homework approximately 3 times a week. Please check Canvas for
homework assignments.

Extra Credit
Extra credit assignments will be assigned along with homework assignments throughout the
year. There will be no need to request extra credit work at any time throughout the school year.
These assignments will serve as personal and professional development tools.

Late Work
Assignments will be available to submit on Canvas for up to 1 week. Assignments assigned on
Mondays and Tuesdays will remain open on Canvas for submission until the Friday of that
week. Assignments assigned in class on Thursdays and Fridays will remain open on Canvas for
submission until the following Friday. This may differ for select assignments. Once an
assignment is closed on Canvas students will have to refer to the quarter late work
assignment for late submission.

Githens Late Work Policy

● Late work for the first half of each quarter will be accepted up until Progress Report time.
● Late work for the last half of each quarter will be accepted up until Report Card time.
● Work from the first half of the quarter WILL NOT be accepted after Progress Reports
● Work from the last half of the quarter WILL NOT be accepted after Report Cards.
● For each week that work is turned in late teachers should deduct 10% from the grade.
So, if a student turns in work 4 weeks late then it is 40% off of the grade they earned.

Grading
Grades will be updated in PowerSchool by the end of the day on Thursdays, if not more
frequently. Progress Reports are sent home at the midpoint of each quarter, and Report Cards
are sent home every 9 weeks. If students do not know their PowerSchool username and
password, a parent or guardian will have to go to the front office to acquire it.

Durham Public Schools currently adheres to the following grading scale:

A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 0-59

Classwork/Participation 30%
Quizzes 10%
Tests 25%
Projects 25%

Parent Conference Procedure:

If you would like to schedule a team conference, please contact me or any of your scholar’s
core teachers so the team can schedule a conference.
