Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you
need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and test. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the types of microcomputers. The coverage of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. The order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

After going through this module, you are expected to assemble

computer hardware following the established procedures and system
requirements. (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-e-28)

Specifically, the activities in this module will enable the learners to:

1. identify the types of microcomputers; and

2. explain the types of microcomputers.

What’s In

Microcomputers are computers with microprocessors and central

processing units. They do not occupy space as much as mainframes do.
When supplemented with a keyboard and a mouse, microcomputers can be
called personal computers. These computers can fit on desks or tables and
prove to be the best choice for single-user tasks.

What Is It

Different Types of Microcomputers

Personal computers come in different forms, such as desktops,

laptops, and personal digital assistants. Let us look at each of these types of
computers.

Desktops: A desktop is intended to be used in a single location. The

spare parts of a desktop computer are readily available at relatively lower
costs. Power consumption is not as critical as that of laptops. Desktops are
widely popular for daily use in the workplace and households.
Laptops: Similar in operation to desktops, laptop computers are
miniaturized and optimized for mobile use. Laptops run on a single battery
or an external adapter that charges the computer batteries.

Netbooks: They fall in the category of laptops but are inexpensive and
relatively small in size. They had a smaller feature set and lesser capacities
in comparison to regular laptops at the time they came into the market.

Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs): They are handheld computers

and popularly known as palmtops. They have a touch screen and a memory
card for the storage of data. PDAs can also be used as portable audio
players, web browsers, and smartphones. Most of them can access the
internet through bluetooth or Wi-Fi communication.

Tablet Computers: Tablets are mobile computers that are very handy
to use and make use of touch screen technology. Tablets come with an
onscreen keyboard, a stylus, or a digital pen. Apple's iPod redefined the
class of tablet computers.

Wearable Computers: A record-setting step in the evolution of

computers was the creation of wearable computers. These computers can be
worn on the body and are often used in the study of behavior modeling and
human health. Military and health professionals have incorporated wearable
computers into their daily routine as a part of such studies. They are also of
great help in tracking human actions, activated when the users' hands and
sensory organs are engaged in other activities. Wearable computers do not
have to be turned on and off and remain in operation without user
intervention.
