Lesson 4: Converting Time Measurements

Objectives:
a. To convert time measure from smaller to larger units and vice –versa.
b. To solve 1-step word problems involving time measure.
c. To appreciate the concept of time measurements.

Time Measures
See the table below that shows the measurements of time from seconds to year.

Time Measurements
Time Conversion
1 Second 60 seconds 1 Minute
1 minute 60 minutes 1 Hour
1 hour 24 hours 1 Day
1 Day 7 days 1 Week
1 Week 4 weeks 1 Moth
1 Month 12 months 1 Year

When converting from a larger time measure to a small measure, we multiply.

Example:
1.) Convert 2 hours into minutes.
1 hour is 60 minutes,
2 hours x 60 minutes = 120 minutes.

2.) Convert 3 days into hours.

1 day is 24 hours,
3 days x 24 hours = 72 hours.

When converting from a smaller time measure to a larger time measure, we divide.

Example:
1.) Convert 48 hours into days
24 hours is 1 day,
48 hours ÷ 24 hours = 2 days

2.) Convert 8 weeks to months

4 weeks is 1 month
8 weeks ÷ 4 weeks = 2 months

Exercise:
A. Convert the following time measures.

1.) Convert 8 hours to minutes

2.) Convert 2 hours to seconds

3.) Convert 3 days to minutes

4.) Convert 5 weeks to days

5.) Convert 2 months to days
