Introduction

This workbook has been prepared for use with the Text: Samson, D. & Daft, R. (2009).
Fundamentals of management. Australia: Cengage.

The purpose of the workbook is to provide support materials for students to regularly engage in
processing, digesting, better understanding and relating management concepts.

Each weekly section generally provides four elements: discussion questions, summary notes,
past mid semester and final exam questions and case studies. You are welcome to use all
elements to assist you in preparation and revision but in general your lecturer will guide as to
which ones may be most useful in each case.

1. Tutorial Questions:

All discussion questions have come from the text.

2. Summary notes

The summary notes have been created to follow the overhead transparencies prepared for the
lectures.

3. Past mid semester test and exam questions

The past mid semester test and exam questions are samples only. There is no guarantee
these sample questions will or will not be in the mid semester test or final exam.
Students are required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the content of the
chapters of the text listed in the unit outline to be covered as course content.

4. Case Studies

Sources for the case studies are acknowledged in each case.

The Model for approaching Case Studies on page 3 has been developed to simplify the
process of using research based ideas to better understand and solve management problems.
This model helps to unpack areas which are often assumed in tertiary level case study work
such as “a student will be able to identify what is going on in the case, select what
management theory is relevant to the case and then be able to answer the questions which
draw all this together so that the situation can be better understood and managed.”
(Each step should be addressed before moving onto the next. This will help to build your
understanding of the situation, clarify the relevant theory before seeking to apply it as
questions are answered.

Generally case studies will be addressed after the theory (lecture and text) content has been
processed and understood.

5. Weeks 1 – 4 include a focused checklist which incrementally build towards giving

confidence and attention to detail in relation to the requirements of the unit.
Model for approaching a Case Study

Use the following steps as a model to identify the issues and relevant management theory and
then use the theory to help better understand and manage the situation. This will help break the
process down into more manageable steps.

A. Familiarity with the situation. (What is going on in this Situation?)

Crucial (Vital) Facts/realities relevant to managing change in this case.

1. Identify major players in this case:

2. Identify major realities/issues which are being confronted.
3. Who has concerns and what are those concerns? Below the waterline issues.

B. Identify a Framework of Management Theory relevant to this case. (What management theory
is relevant to this case?) Generally in this unit the theory which is relevant is the chapter
or topic that the case study is linked to.

C. Applying theory to manage the case situation. (How can I use the knowledge from my
theoretical framework and management skills to better understand and manage this
situation?)
Common Test and exam terminology

The most common terminology used for asking test and exam questions include.

For short answer type questions:

Define
Definitions call for concise, clear, precise meaning of a word, phrase or concept.

List
List relevant items, possibly in note form.

Explain
Clarify and interpret the material you present. Give reasons (why or how) where possible

Describe
Present the details and characteristics of. To give a verbal picture in a logical sequence

Outline
Sketch in general terms; give the main features of, or general principles of a subject.

Compare and Contrast

Compare: To show both the differences and the similarities.
Contrast: To compare by showing the differences.

For essay questions. Often a statement is made and students are asked to discuss the statement.

Discuss

What does it mean to Discuss?

 Talk (in this case write) about the different aspects of this question.
 A discussion should :
(i) show the writer understands all the aspects referred to or implied in
the question,
(ii) identify and examine different issues raised by the question. This
will involve a critical analysis of the issues raised or implied. Ask
questions of the discussion topic to raise the issues.
(iii) outline views for and against and then draw a logical conclusion
based on your previous content and discussion to say whether you
agree or disagree with the statement.

 To achieve an in depth discussion a writer will “analyse” or “break down” a

complex topic/question into its smaller parts so the writer can demonstrate they
understand the different issues raised by the question.

Topic: Introduction to
Management
Week 1 Text Chapter 1. Introduction to Management

Discussion Questions

5 What similarities do you see among the four management functions of planning, organising, leading and
controlling? Do you think these functions are related – that is, is a manager who performs well in one
function likely to perform well in the others?

9 How would the managerial work of senior executives such as George and Peter Dryen (who own and
run Dryen Australia, a company of some 40-plus people) differ from a manager at middle level in a
government department or business?

10 What is the difference between efficiency and effectiveness? Which is more important for
performance? Can an organization succeed in both simultaneously?

11 If managerial work is characterised by variety, fragmentation and brevity, how do managers perform
basic management functions such as planning, which would seem to require reflection and analysis?
12 A professor once told her students: ‘The purpose of a management course is to teach students about
management, not to teach them to be managers’. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Discuss.

Clarification of Preparation for Week 2.

The following completed work and documents should be brought to class next week.
Tick each item below when completed.
1. Complete your personal goals sheet with an outline of your goals, how you propose to
achieve them and how you will know when you have achieved them. (If you were not at
class a copy of the goals sheet can be downloaded from Week 1 on the portal under
MAN1100.
a. Good goals for this unit should be set in line with the requirements of the unit
outline.
b. A good goal has the following characteristics – Challenging, specific, measurable,
achievable, realistic and time related or CSMART goal. Check to see your goal/s
have these characteristics.
2. Purchase or have access to a text book. The current text book is - Samson, D. & Daft, R.
(2009). Fundamentals of Management. Third pacific rim edition. Australia: Cengage. All
students should either have a textbook or access to one between two if you wish to share
it. The book can be sold next semester as it will be used again in next semester’s course.
All tests and exams will be based on the text as are the tutorial questions for each tutorial.
3. Memorize the four principles for managerial success as outlined in class 1, to be ready to
write out in class next week.

The four principles are:

i. Poor performance is operating at or below average with no upward trend.
ii. 90% of the solution to a problem is understanding what the problem is.
iii. To be able to understand what the problem is we need to be able to ask “good
questions”.
iv. A good manager asks themselves “What am I responsible for?”
4. Read the text and become familiar with what is meant by each of the 10 roles and 3 skills
as mentioned in the text book. See pages 30-32 on the roles and pages 20-22 for the 3
skills.
5. Read through a day in the life of Janet (see next page) Prepare answers to the following
questions. Who are the major people/players involved in this situation? What are the
issues being faced? Who has what concerns? Identify which of the 10 roles and 3 skills
from chapter 1 in the text are being performed by Janet in this day. Give specific
examples to illustrate where the roles and skills are being performed. Bring your answers
to class in week 2.
6. Either prepare answers to the discussion questions outlined on page 8 in this workbook or
in the text at the end of chapter 1. ie Chapter 1: 5,9,10,11,12.
OR
Prepare your own summary notes from the content of chapter 1 of the text using the
summary notes outline as a basis to start with. See page 9 in this workbook.
7. Re - Read through the unit outline to be thoroughly familiar with the requirements. (A
copy is on the portal in MAN1100.) Meet with another member of your group or
someone else in the class to prepare an answer to the following question from the unit
outline – “What am I responsible for?” (Suggestion – go through the Unit outline and
underline or highlight different aspects to the question. Put the page number of where you
got your ideas from next to each idea.
8. Attempted to answer the sample mid semester test question from Week 1 theory on page
11.

9. Completed “My Personal Reflections” on what I learnt about management this week on
page 14

Bring your completed work class next week.
