Big questions

1. Language for instruction: Vietnamese or English?


- Student age: 12th grade student of a public school.
- They get used to be taught in Vietnamese in class.
- Our lesson plan focuses on practicing skimming and scanning skills, we
only expect students to improve in reading skills through the lesson,
therefore, Vietnamese maybe an appropriate choice to be used in order to
save time and help students acquire the knowledge conveniently and
clearly.
2. Activities: individual, pair or group work?
- In pre-task, teacher just asks questions and students give answers
individually.
- In while-task, teacher lets students work individually to save time and
practice self-learning skill.
- In post-task, teacher asks students to work in pairs in order to facilitate
teamwork and communication skills, create an ideal environment for
students to share their ideas with their friends.
3. Teach new vocabulary:
- Teacher shows pictures and let student guess the name of each city.
- T shows pictures and gives some hints of the related words to encourage
students to guess the meaning.
- T explains the meaning of each word.
- T asks students to repeat new words.
4. What sub-skills to teach in Reading skills (skimming, scanning)?
Through asking students to do 3 tasks of a reading text, teacher aims to
help students practice dealing with answering questions in a reading text
quickly by skimming and scanning skills.
5. What is TBL lesson procedure?
Procedure suggested by Willis (1996)
 Pre-task: Introduction to topic and task
- Teacher uses pictures to introduce the topic and help students to
understand the theme and objectives of the task.
- Teacher highlights some useful words.
 Task cycle:
- The task is done by students.
- Teacher walks around and monitors

6. How to make your lesson more cohesive?


 In pre-task:
- Because this is a review lesson, so that teacher needs to remind the
knowledge in the previous lesson.
- Besides showing vocabulary, teacher should introduce some helpful
structures in the lesson.
- After introducing the new words, teacher needs to put these words in
context, for example, teacher lets students to practice these words by a
small task such as …
 In task:
- Teacher highlights the new words that appear in the reading text.
- Teacher explains and introduces carefully the ways to scan and skim in
the text.
 In post-task:
- Teacher gives hints to students by reminding the new words, structures
and ideas from the text.
- When students work in pairs, teacher should walk around and take note.
- After discussing in pairs, teacher should ask students to present and give
feedback.
