From the previous reporters, the process of socialization was discussed. Also, the concept of
how one learns to live with his/her society was emphasized through shared views and
perspectives. Notably, on this third topic, according to sociologists, “we are shaped by our cultural
environment and by the influences of significant people and groups in our lives”. This implies
that a person’s choices and actions are often influenced by his/her extrinsic environment [other
than the intrinsic factors].
From the topics, I reflected that not only does an individual learns the essential components
of being part of the society but also is affected to behave in a way that is contrary to what is
expected by the society so-called the deviants. Base on the report, deviant behavior is understood
on how a person relates to these three categories, functionalism, conflict, and symbolic
interactionism. It was discussed that behavior is considered a violation once it does not conform
to any of those categories’ idea of what a society should be.
From understanding the process of socialization, I think that a person, in his/her journey
of knowing, doing, becoming, and living together with, is always striving to have a place of
relevance in his/her society. Set aside the survival or defensive mechanism of a person to commit
unacceptable actions, the desire of thriving and adapting often contributes to making
unconventional actions that are deemed deviant. Besides, some deviant behaviors are caused by
how society has been so unfair and inconsiderate to that unfortunate person. I reflected that the
lack of knowing brings a lack of understanding. And by not understanding despite and regardless
of what a person was and is, we become unloving. Without love or not being loved, one can do
things that are deemed deviant to society. Thus, deviant behaviors exist. It seems for me, that the
more we suppress those we call deviants, without understanding one another, without listening,
without considering different beliefs, the more deviant behaviors arise.
