Boom Telescope Cylinder
Calibration
This procedure covers the calibration of the telescope
cylinder length and pin switches. It also covers swing
potentiometer and crane data reset calibration. For
latching boom telescope system troubleshooting see 1
SM Keysheet Area 17---002.
Refer to the Crane Operator’s Manual for specific
descriptions and correct operation of the boom
telescope controls, latching system, and Rated
Capacity Limiter (RCL) display features.
Crane Set Up
1. Lower, detach, and secure the load, as required.
2. Stabilize the crane for service as follows:

a. Park the crane, out of the way, on a firm and
level surface; engage the park brake.
b. Engage the swing park brake or travel swing 2. Press the DISPLAY/SELECT button to access the

c. Level the crane on fully extended outriggers.
d. Fully retract and position the boom, as re-
quired.
3. Properly install the boom telescope remote control
box. See “Emergency Telescope Operation” in the
Operator’s Manual for complete instructions.
Leave the remote control box connected until in-
structed to remove.
Swing Potentiometer Calibration
In order to calibrate the latching system the swing
potentiometer must first be “zeroed”.
1. With the boom over the front of the carrier and posi-
tioned in the boom rest with the travel swing lock
engaged, turn the upper ignition key to the on posi-
tion.

6. Press the ZERO SWING SENSOR button. (The

boom must be positioned in the boom rest with the
travel swing lock engaged.)

4. Use the keypad to enter the security code “123E”.

(Select a number by pressing the button adjacent
to the column and row of the desired character.)

Note: Once the above screen is displayed, the

security code must be entered before you can
proceed forward or return to the previous
screen.

7. Press the BACK button.

8. Press the DISPLAY/SELECT button to return to the

normal operation screen.

Crane Data Reset Calibration
When a new RCL flash card is installed, the crane data
within the display must be reset to ensure proper boom
telescope system calibration.
1. With the boom over the front of the carrier and posi-
tioned in the boom rest with the travel swing lock
engaged, turn the upper ignition key to the on posi-
tion.

Select Machine Type
1. On the RCL display, press the DISPLAY/SELECT
button. This takes you to the telescope information
screen. Press the top right button. This takes you
to a number pad screen. Enter the security code
“123E” by choosing the corresponding row and
column buttons.
2. Press SELECT MACHINE TYPE (should be last op-
tion).
3. Press P9.
4. Confirm selection by pressing YES.
5. Should receive message “Machine Type Selection
Successful” and “Current Machine Type = P9”.
6. If message “Machine Type Selection Failed” is dis-
played, check that boom is in manual mode. The
telescope cylinder may have to be zeroed first.
Zero The Telescope Cylinder
1. Using the boom telescope remote control box,
latch into T3 and confirm boom is fully retracted.
2. Switch the latching cylinder to PIN.
3. Confirm that the PINNED and NOT LATCHED lights
on the remote control box are on. The telescope
cylinder may have to be extended or retracted
slightly to obtain NOT LATCHED light.
4. Fully retract the telescope cylinder until it bottoms
out.
5. On the RCL display, go into the calibration menu.
(See Select Machine Type Step 1).
6. Press EXTENSION SENSORS (should be first op-
tion).
7. Press ZERO TELESCOPE CYLINDER. Once calib-
rated it should read “0.000”.
8. Extend the cylinder slightly and retract it again to
verify that the cylinder length returns to 0.000. It
should stop at 0.000 ± .009.
9. Exit the calibration screen by pressing the green
CRANE SETUP button and get back to the tele-
scope display.
10. Extend the telescope cylinder to approximately
22.5”.
11. Extend or Retract cylinder slightly to obtain PIN
CENTERED light on remote control box.
12. Switch the latching cylinder to LATCH. The
LATCHED and NOT PINNED lights on the remote
control box should be illuminated.

Calibrate The Pin Positions
1. Setup the crane on outriggers.
2. Set the boom angle to 75˚.
3. Make sure the boom is in EM1 mode.
4. Go into the calibration menu on RCL display. (See
Select Machine Type Step 1).
5. Press EXTENSION SENSORS.
6. Press ZERO EXTENSION SENSOR. Confirm ex-
tension sensor reads “00”.
7. Confirm the cylinder is LATCHED and NOT
PINNED into the T3 section. (Cylinder length
should be 21.5”---22.5”).
8. Retract the cylinder until it bottoms out (should be
around 21.5”).
9. Go into the calibration menu on RCL display. (See
Select Machine Type Step 1).
10. Press EXTENSION SENSORS.
11. Press SET PIN/LATCH POSITION; press YES to
confirm.
NOTE: After pressing SET PIN/LATCH
POSITION, make sure “Calibration Successful”
appears. This ensures controller accepted the
calibration.
12. Extend the T3 section to 355.5”.
13. Switch to PIN, extend slightly until pin pops in and
PINNED light is displayed.
14. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
15. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
16. With the cylinder bottomed out in T3 press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
17. Switch to PIN and bump the cylinder toward ex-
tend direction. The PINNED and NOT LATCHED
lights should be on.
18. Retract the cylinder to 11.5”. Extend or Retract
slightly to obtain the PIN CENTERED light.
19. Latch into T2, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed, and retract the cylinder until it bot-
toms out.
20. With the cylinder bottomed out in T2, press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
21. Extend the T2 section to 356”.
22. Switch to PIN, extend slightly until pin pops in and
PINNED is displayed.
23. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
24. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
25. With the cylinder bottomed out in T2 press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.

26. Switch to PIN and bump the cylinder toward ex-
tend direction. The PINNED and NOT LATCHED
lights should be on.
27. Retract the cylinder to 1.0”. Extend or Retract
slightly to obtain the PIN CENTERED light.
28. Latch into T1, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed, and retract the cylinder until it bot-
toms out.
29. With the cylinder bottomed out in T1, press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
30. Extend the T1 section to 356.5”.
31. Switch to PIN, extend slightly until pin pops in and
PINNED light is displayed.
32. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
33. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
34. With the cylinder bottomed out in T1 press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
35. On the RCL display, press SPAN EXTENSION
SENSOR. Enter “86.1E” using the rows and
columns.
36. At this point all 0% and 100% positions are calib-
rated.
37. Fully retract the boom.
38. The boom should now be fully retracted with the
cylinder LATCHED and NOT PINNED to the T3 sec-
tion. If not already, unplug the manual control box
and on RCL display, press the green CRANE
SETUP and select an outrigger configuration.
Then change boom mode to EM3.
39. Plug up the remote control box. Confirm the cylin-
der is approximately 22.5”.
40. Extend or Retract slightly to obtain the PIN
CENTERED light.
41. Latch into T3, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed.
42. Extend T3 to 189”.
43. Switch to PIN and extend slightly until pin pops in
and PINNED is displayed.
44. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
45. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
46. With the cylinder bottomed out in T3, go back into
RCL display calibration screen, then extension
sensors, then press SET PIN/LATCH POSITION
and confirm with YES.
47. Switch to PIN and bump the cylinder toward ex-
tend direction. The PINNED and NOT LATCHED
lights should be on.
48. LATCH and UNPIN T3 and retract it and pin it at the
0% position.

49. Unplug the remote control box and on RCL display,
press the green CRANE SETUP and select an out-
rigger configuration. Then change boom mode to
EM4.
50. Confirm that the cylinder has moved to 21”---22”.
51. Extend or Retract slightly to obtain the PIN
CENTERED light.
52. Latch into T3, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed.
53. Extend T3 to 94.5”.
54. Switch to Pin and extend slightly until pin pops in
and PINNED is displayed.
55. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
56. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
57. With the cylinder bottomed out in T3, go back into
RCL display calibration screen
58. Press EXTENSION SENSORS.
59. Press SET PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with
YES.
60. Switch to PIN and bump the cylinder toward ex-
tend direction. The PINNED and NOT LATCHED
lights should be on.
61. Retract the cylinder to 11.5”. Extend or Retract
slightly to obtain the PIN CENTERED light.
62. Latch into T2, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed.
63. Extend T2 to 183.8”.
64. Switch to PIN, extend slightly until pin pops in and
PINNED is displayed.
65. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
66. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.
67. With the cylinder bottomed out in T2 press SET
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
68. Switch to PIN and bump the cylinder toward ex-
tend direction. The PINNED and NOT LATCHED
lights should be on.
69. Retract the cylinder to 1.0”. Extend or Retract
slightly to obtain the PIN CENTERED light.
70. Latch into T1, LATCHED and NOT PINNED should
be displayed.
71. Extend T1 to 178.6”.
72. Switch to PIN, extend slightly until pin pops in and
PINNED is displayed.
73. Retract the cylinder slightly until NOT LATCHED is
displayed.
74. Switch back to LATCH and confirm with LATCHED
light. Continue retracting the cylinder slowly until
the cylinder bottoms out.

75. With the cylinder bottomed out in T1 press SET Testing
PIN/LATCH POSITION and confirm with YES.
76. At this point all 50% positions and the one 25% pos-
ition are calibrated.
77. Fully retract the boom. DANGER
78. Calibration is now completed. Testing must be done by a qualified, trained
79. Remove and properly store the boom telescope operator. Follow all limitations and
remote control box. requirements as specified in the Crane Rating
Manual. Do not perform any lifting with the
crane unless you are a qualified, trained
operator.

1. Put boom in EM1 mode.

2. Fully extend and retract boom at 75˚ boom angle
without load.
3. Fully extend and retract boom at 30˚ boom angle
without load.
4. Put boom in EM3 mode.
5. Fully extend and retract boom at 75˚ boom angle
without load.
6. Fully extend and retract boom at 30˚ boom angle
without load.
7. Put boom in EM4 mode.
8. Fully extend and retract boom at 75˚ boom angle
without load.
9. Fully extend and retract boom at 30˚ boom angle
without load.
10. Put boom in EM1 mode.
11. With 12,000 lb (5 448kg) load, fully extend and re-
tract boom at 75˚ boom angle.
12. Put v in EM3 mode.
13. With 12,000 lb (5 448kg) load, fully extend and re-
tract boom at 75˚ boom angle.
14. Put boom in EM4 mode.
15. With 12,000 lb (5 448kg) load, fully extend and re-
tract boom at 75˚ boom angle.
16. If problems occur during testing, recalibrate, re-
pair, and/or troubleshoot as required.
