THEORY

The total power consumed by a balanced load can be found by using two
watt-meters and three CT’s. The load is assumed to be resistive for star connected
load as shown in figure. The vector diagram for such a balanced star-connected load
is shown in figure.
Draw Vector Diagram

Let us consider the problem in terms of R.M.S. values.

Let, VR, VY, VB = R.M.S. values of the three phase voltages, and
IR, IY, IB = R.M.S. values of the currents.
Since these voltages and currents are assumed sinusoidal, they can be
represented by vectors, the currents are in phase with their respective phase
voltages.
From vector diagram
Current through wattmeter, W1 = IRB= IRB = IR - IB
Potential difference across pressure coil of wattmeter W1 =VRN
(Vectorially)
The value of IRB is found by compounding IR and IB reversed as shown in figure. It
may be observed that phase difference between VRN and IRB = (300 + ). (For
Inductive load)
 Reading of wattmeter W1 = VRNIRB cos (300). As =0
Similarly, current through wattmeter W2 = IYR= IYB = IY - IB
Potential difference across pressure coil of wattmeter W2=VYN
(Vectorially)
The value of IYB is found by compounding IY and IB reversed as shown
in figure. It may be observed that phase difference between VYN and IYB = (300 - ).
(For Inductive load)
Since the load is balanced, VRN = VYN (Phase Voltage)
And IRB = IYB = IL (Line Current)
 W1 = VRN IL
W2 = VYN IL

 Total Power, P = W1 + W2
= VRN IRB + VYN IYB
= VRN (𝐼𝑅 − 𝐼𝐵 ) + VYN (𝐼𝑌 − 𝐼𝐵 )
= VRN 𝐼𝑅 + VYN 𝐼𝑌 − (VRN + VYN )𝐼𝐵
𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 ; VRN + VYN + VBN = 0
𝑖. 𝑒. VBN = −(VRN + VYN )

∴ 𝑃 = VRN 𝐼𝑅 + VYN 𝐼𝑌 + VBN 𝐼𝐵
Hence the sum of the readings of the two watt-meters gives the total power
consumption in the three phase load.

Procedure

1. Connect the circuit as per the circuit diagram

2. Make sure-load is off, dimmerstat is at zero position
3. Switch ON the supply, adjust the output voltage of dimmerstat to
230 volt
4. Switch ON the load corresponding to balanced load condition
5. Note down readings of ammeter, voltmeter, watt meter
6. Increase the load maintaining balanced load condition & Note down
readings of ammeter, voltmeter, watt meter
7. Now adjust load corresponding to unbalance load condition & Note
down readings of ammeter, voltmeter, and watt meter. Take two sets
of readings
8. Make the load OFF, bring the dimmerstat to zero position, switch
OFF the main supply

Balanced Load Condition

𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 = (𝑽𝑹 𝑰𝑹 ) + (𝑽𝒀 𝑰𝒀 ) + (𝑽𝑩 𝑰𝑩 )

since cos Ø = 1 as lamp bank is a resistive load

Power from Wattmeter readings = (W1*M.F. + W2 *M.F.) *CT Ratio

Unbalanced Load Condition – Calculations are same as above.
