Question 2; Lydia Noakes

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents certain social groups in a very obvious way. They are stereotypical to
British social groups as it is filmed in the UK using British actors with typical British accents. Our
personal film is filmed in school grounds therefore show a range of strong stereotypes. Most
successful and popular teen drama films such as ‘mean girls’ are situa5ted in the United States which
contrasts our location and makes it stand out from the rest therefore entices the audience to see the
difference between American and British culture. To be more specific the protagonist Chelsea is
represented as what British culture call a ‘Chav’ this stereotypical name represents aggressive
teenagers, of working class background, who repeatedly engage in anti-social behavior, our
character Rosie supports this stereotype as she dresses informally, She puts her lipstick on whilst
walking towards the school which implies she’s more bothered about her physical appearance than
her academic career.

putting her lip-gloss on.

She also uses inappropriate language towards teachers and fellow students. we decided on this
because its conventional to show a dominant character in a teen movie to contrast against the
others especially males as people have a perceived conception that woman are weaker than men so
here Chelsea subverts her genre stereotype. The character Jerome also supports his serotype as
being a jock which represents a male athlete as every time he’s being filmed he is playing sport.
-Here is a freeze frame of a close up of Jerome running on the running machine in the
gym.

He also has a serious approach towards it as he quotes ‘come on girls’ when they’re wasting time.
We included another very contrasting stereotype to add even more of a contrast and show the day
to day clashes in British society, Liam plays the role of a geek, and he supports his stereotype by
working in most of his important shots we exaggerated this by showing a close up of Liam typing on
the computer.

-Here is a freeze frame of a close up shot of Liam working on the computer.

He also tried to fit in with the other students by uncomfortably using their slang, although he later
on subverts his stereotype as a geek as he stands up for himself and takes action by asking the
teacher to swap groups when playing sport. Our protagonist Chelsea and antagonist Liam are the
binary opposites of male/female, lazy/hardworking and rude/polite. There is always one which is
preferred by society and normally it’s the good over evil but the audiences are yet to discover the
evil characters in the film. We want to attract the social group of teenagers. This should be
successful as our main character Chelsea is a modern student (teenager) and so they can relate to
her easily.
