Activity #1

1. Why is there a need to study the impact of human population growth on the
environment? (5 pts.)

Rapid growth of human population in a certain area can cause rapid resource
depletion which may lead to environmental problems such as the most commonly
known as global warming and deforestation. The impact of population growth in
the environment in simple terms is explained as the more the population grows, it
means that the area or city needs to broaden the space for residential areas. As
we all know, mountains are getting paved, forests are cut down to provide space
for subdivisions.

2. What does sustainability mean to you? (5 pts.)

Sustainability means to be able to achieve something that doesn’t harm or lessen

the chances to those who follow. An example for this is sustainable energy through
renewable clean energy. Energy is gathered in a harmless way such as wind energy
and solar energy that is used to produce electricity.

When I was in elementary school, we went on a school trip to Nelson Archival’s

home. Nelson Archival is a known environmentalist in Cebu where his home runs
on solar power. This is another example of sustainability. One reason is because
he achieved to save energy at the expense of none.

3. What are the consequences of unsustainable vs sustainable living? What impacts

do these have on quality of life we want for us and future generations? (10 pts.)

There are widely known consequences of unsustainable living. Such as pollution

and contamination, wasteful water consumption as well as rapid urbanization.
These type of living can lead to poor physical and mental health for people.
Whereas if sustainable living is adapted, it would reduce the chances of increasing
the damage of global warming, and lessens the costs of living similar to
Environmentalist Nelson Archival where instead of owing VECO for the electricity,
VECO owes him instead.

Consequences of unsustainable living like pollution and global warming is very hard
to solve or treat. We all know this since we know that these issues are currently
visible. But no matter how these issues are treated, the damage done is permanent
or it takes too long to recover. Aside from being harmful, rapid urbanization of
areas can lead to less space for new generations to live in.

4. Think of an environmental problem that requires a global perspective for a solution.

How might this problem be examined from a variety of environmental justification
perspectives? (10 pts.)

I guess that the environmental problem that needs global perspective is global
warming and pollution. There are programs that are practiced by every individual,
organization and government however this is not enough if not everyone is
compliant. As for the solutions, there are establishments that are implementing no
plastics or the use of paper cups, plates, and straws to minimize the effects of
burning and using plastics. There are certain countries that have implemented
environment-friendly plans such as building establishments around trees instead
of cutting them down or using solar panels to power their establishments.
