FOR DRILLING FLUID SYSTEM

Egyptian Mud
Engineering & Chemicals Co.

SODIUM BICARBONATE
DESCRIPTION TECHNICAL & ENGINEERING INFORMATION

Sodium Bicarbonate is used in water-based drilling fluids Sodium Bicarbonate precipitates out the calcium ions in
for treating cement contamination, and for treating cement (Calcium Hydroxide) and anhydrite (Calcium
calcium contamination while drilling anhydrites. Sulphate) in muds above 8.5 pH, as follows:
Ca(OH)2 + NaHCO3 = CaCO3 + NaOH + H2O
CaSO4 + 2NaHCO3 = CaCO3 + Na2SO4 + H2O + CO2

Solubility Soluble in water Sodium Bicarbonate is not classified as hazardous, but

the powder is slightly alkaline (pH 8.5) and may be an
irritant. The following safety wear, as recommended in
the MSDS, should be used when mixing Sodium Bicar-
APPLICATION
bonate:
- Standard PPE
- Dust Mask
Sodium Bicarbonate is mainly used for treating cement
contamination (i.e. Calcium Hydroxide) in water-based
muds. It is also used for treating calcium contamination
that can occur while drilling anhydrite formations (i.e.
Calcium Sulphate).
The recommended treatment or pre-treatment is 0.5 ppb
to 1 ppb Sodium Bicarbonate. If severe contamination
has occurred, then start treating the mud system as
above while performing pilot tests to determine the actual
concentration required.
As a rough guide, 1 lb Sodium Bicarbonate will react with
1.1 lb cement. It is important to avoid over treating the
mud system with Sodium Bicarbonate because the
excess carbonates and bicarbonates may produce high
gel strengths
