DESCRIPTION TECHNICAL & ENGINEERING INFORMATION

Calcium Chloride (CaCL2) is used in water-based drilling The bulk density of Calcium Chloride is 2JFP for
fluids, in oil-based drilling fluids, and as a brine for powder. Calcium Chloride solubility in water reaches
completion, work-over and packer fluids. saturation with a brine density of 11.6 ppg (1.39 s.g.)
at 20°C
(42% CaCLl2 w/w).
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Higher brine densities can be obtained by
blending saturated Calcium Chloride brine (or
powder) with saturated Calcium Bromide brine at 14.2
Appearance Crystalline Powder ppg, reaching 15.0 ppg (1.80 sg) by adding Calcium
Chloride powder to saturated Calcium Bromide.

Calcium Chloride is supplied in 25 kg sealed polythene
Melting Point 770°C (1,439°F)) sacks and should be stored in a dry location.

Calcium Chloride is an irritant and can be hazardous.

APPLICATION
For water-based drilling fluids, Calcium Chloride is used
as a soluble weighting agent and as a source of Calcium
to prevent clay hydration in Calcium inhibitive systems.
For oil-based drilling fluids, Calcium Chloride is used for
adjusting the activity of the water phase (water phase
salinity).
Calcium Chloride brine is also used as a completion,
work-over or packer fluid. Refer to Calcium Chloride
Brine Tables to determine the concentration required to
obtain the required brine density.
Care is required when mixing because Calcium
Chloride Powder, Granules or flakes generate heat
when added to water, and Calcium Chloride brine
attacks leather, so rubber safety boots should be worn.
The following safety wear, as recommended in the
MSDS, should be used when mixing Calcium Chloride:
- Standard PPE
- Rubber Safety Boots
- Chemical Splash Goggles
- Respiratory Mask
- Chemical Apron
- Chemical Gauntlets
Make sure crews handling and mixing Calcium Chloride
are familiar with the MSDS, know the corrective actions
to take, and know where eye-wash bottles are located.
