FINAL EXAMINATION

1. Identify the power bases of the individuals involved in the sponsorship scandal: Jean
Brault, Chuck Guite, Joe Morselli, Alain Renaud, Tony Mignacca, and Sheila Fraser.

Jean Brault can be classified having reward power. He is the president of Groupaction.
Groupaction is an advertising company that has ties with the sponsorship scandal in Canada.
Jean being the president uses his power to influence manipulate things inside the company and
tried to conceal his involvement with the sponsorship scandal.

Chuck Guite can be classified having coercive power. A bureaucrat in charge of the sponsorship
program, Chuck uses his coercive power to submit extortion and defilement. Later on, he was
arrested for fraud by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Joe Morselli can be classified having legitimate and reward power. A Liberal Party fundraiser,
Jean Brault uses his influence to cover up the political individuals from ever involving in the
scandal. However, he testified that the money exchange was with Morselli.
Alain Renaud is known to have connection and reward power. A liberal party lobbyist, he acted
as the fundaraiser of the party. With this Alain creates an influence and networks with the party,
this led to Brault bring Renaud to secure him the sponsorship and advertising contracts.

Tony Mignaca is known to possess legitimate and coercive power. As a close aide to former
cabinet minister Alfonso Gagliano, Gaglinano was in charge of the sponsorship program. With
such connection Mignacca was in the limelight of the scandal and heavily into it. He utilizes his
power to organize the failing fraud that they have been into.
Sheila Fraser is known to have legitimate and expert power. As a General auditor, he uncovers
the fraudulent behavior revolving with the sponsorship. Fraser uncovers the truth behind the
controversy and utilizes her power to indict Jean Brault. She seen to be a genuine person with
honesty and true to her obligation.

2. What influence tactics did the prominent characters in the sponsorship saga use to try
pressure people to act in certain ways?
Utilizing their power and the promise to wealth, many of them are blinded by greed and
fear. Having the key people on your side to professionally cover up the dirty works behind the
scenes. The characters use a tactic that would conceal their identity while gaining profits from
the scandalous acts. This gives a false security to those people involve making their actions easy
to manipulate by those who really holds the greatest influence and legitimate power. Having
wealth as reward many are blinded by the stream of cash flowing, after they received the streams
of money the higher ups then proceed to use coercion to keep the cash flowing and information
about the fraudulent action concealed. This runs smoothly until a peeping nose of a general
auditor caught wind of their operation and is swift to move against them. This proves to be the
turning point for the fraudulent behavior and unmask the people behind it. Influence, greed, and
premature involvement makes the people engaged in the fraudulent behavior easier to control
and manipulate.

3. What factor contributed to the political behavior evident in the sponsorship


scandal?

Politics involves money, greed is prominent even to those who thinks themselves genuine
and true. In this case there are money to be made in the millions. With a company acting as front
many believed that this can be an easy way to earn millions therefore many are blinded the their
greed and swift to act. This turns into a domino effect where every person that is directly
connected to the subject is drawn to act inconspicuous ways to gain such modality. Having
legitimate power and a promise of reward many are deep into the scandal that they plunder in the
millions. Having now the money they now proceed to use coercive actions to make sure that
every person involve is doing their part to conceal the scandal as long as possible.
