Case study - Robin Hood (IIM Nagpur SMP-001) Course Title – Strategic Thinking and decision Making Contextual Robin hood was a
revolutionary, trained soldier and tactician. He was a master of archery and great at persuading others. Within a small span of time, he
arranged a group of like-minded people who were ready to become a part of his journey and follow his ideology. Robin Hood’s revolt
against the Sheriff began as a personal revenge against the Sheriff of Nottingham. In the later years he was able to consolidate a large
group which was famously referred upon as the “Merry Men”. Mission: “Rob from the rich and give to the poor” Objective: “To overthrow or
kill the Sheriff and bring back the “Lionheart” King Richard. Hierarchy: Robin hood (The Supremo) Level Two Name Department Functions
Will Scarlet Intelligence & Scouting Following and keeping track of the Sheriff, his men, Rich and Tax collectors Little John Discipline &
Archery Keeping Discipline among the Forces and ensuring their Battle Skills are Top notch Scar lock Finances & Treasury Converted the
loot into cash, paid shares of the take and kept the surplus safe Much (The miller’s son) Food supplies Took up the charge of ensuring
Food supplies for the ever-increasing band of Merry Men SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats Strong
Leadership of Robin hood Sheriff and prince john were power as allies Dethroning or killing the Sheriff Sheriff’s army becoming powerful
and focused Huge Band of trained fighters specializing in the fields of Archery Lack of resources to cater the ever-expanding band
Reworking the organizational structure and revenue model Rich travelers taking long routes avoiding Sherwood Forest Well defined
distribution of authority Shortfall of cashflow as Revenues declined Finding sustainable methods obtaining provisions Likelihood of
penetration by Sheriff’s Men Acceptance among the Villagers and general masses Lack of communication and Discipline Befriending the
Barons Chances of revolt within the group for leadership due to Difference in opinion. Issues to be Addressed 1. Line up the goals of the
Merry Men with Robin’s new strategy and accomplish the task of bringing King Richard home again. 2. Restructuring and Optimization of
the increased Merry Men and maintain discipline. 3. Ensure cashflows and proper source of revenue. 4. Enmity with the Sheriff to be settled
before he gets a chance to deliver a mortal blow. Way Forward 1. Taking insights from all the Band members before making a decision to
ensure no one misses out. 2. Implementation of new organizational structure. 3. Employing the new revenue model which will resort to
taxation rather than straight away confiscation. 4. The Merry Men should join hands with the barons for future amnesty and relief from
Sheriff and Prince John. Proposed Organizational Structure Level 1 Robin Hood: He would continue to be the chief decision maker Level 2
Will Scarlet Head of battalion 1 Little John Head of battalion 2 Scar lock Head of battalion 3 Much (The miller’s son) Head of battalion 4
Level 3 Vigilance Officer For every battalion each Training supervisor For every battalion each Treasury chief For every battalion each
Financier For every battalion each Recruitment administrator For every battalion each Shelter administrator For every battalion each Food
supervisor For every battalion each Scouting officer For every battalion each Level 4 Vigilance associate For every battalion each Training
subordinate For every battalion each Treasury delegate For every battalion each Financier next-in-command For every battalion each
Recruitment sub-head For every battalion each Shelter assistant For every battalion each Food associate For every battalion each Scouting
apprentice For every battalion each Advantages: 1. Arrangement of a large band into smaller battalions would make it easier to maintain
discipline. 2. More people would be handed responsibilities, spreading a sense of responsibility among all members. 3. Groups moving to
different places would reduce burden on Sherwood Forest. 4. Much, Scarlet, Scar lock and John would be no longer under-employed. 5.
Increased responsibilities would enable every member to unleash their capabilities. 6. Robin Hood would be relieved of daily work and
devote more time to the strategic dealings with Barons and focus on making peace with the Sheriff 7. Merry Men will spread over
geographies and get access to more Resources and methods to generate revenue 8. New method of taxation can be easily executed
through seizing more than travel route. Drawbacks: 1. Communication gap which already exists will widen as Robin Hood will not meet all
members. 2. The deputies appointed can be incompetent slowing down processes. 3. New structure might not be approved by the band
members. New revenue model will create a source of regular cashflows but can lead to distrust from the villagers and townspeople who are
the Merry Men’s Best friends. Advantages of joining hands with the Barons: 1. Robin Hood and the Merry Men would be guaranteed
amnesty in the future. 2. Sheriff and Prince John can be easily neutralized. 3. Resources of the Barons and manpower of Merry Men would
together make a Supreme force. 4. Robin Hood will gain trust of the King. He shall be designated to Executive roles in the future. 5. Robin
Hood’s political connections would act as a safeguard in tough situations as he would have connections at court. Disadvantages: 1. The
Barons might not live up to their commitment and backstab the Merry Men. 2. If plans fail prince John will unleash his vicious side. 3. Merry
Men have their motto as Rob the rich befriending them might lead to anguish among the group. Naresh Kumar Maheshwary SMP 001 IIM
