CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND TESTING UNIT WEIGHT OF AGGREGATES

EXPERIMENT NO. 5
UNIT WEIGHT OF AGGREGATES

SCOPE:
This method covers the procedures for determining the unit weight of fine, coarse,
remixes aggregates.

APPARATUS:
1. Metal volumetric measure, 1/10 and 1/2 cu. ft. that can stand rough usage.
2. Tamping rod, steel, 5/8 inch diameter, 24 inches long.
3. Balance and weights.

PROCEDURE:

A. CALIBRATION OF VOLUMETRIC MEASURE

The volumetric measure shall be calibrated by determining the weight of water

required to fill it. Volume of container equals weight of water divided by the unit
weight of water at the temperature of calibration.

Sample of aggregate for test shall be too-dry and thoroughly mixed.

B. COMPACT WEIGHT DETERMINATION

1. Fill one-third of the measure, level, and tamp 25 times evenly distributed
over the surface.
2. Fill two-thirds of the measure, to over-flowing. Each time the same
procedure as in Step (1) is repeated.

In tamping, the rod should penetrate only the layer being tamped and
should not be forced into the bottom of measure or last layer placed.

3. Strike-off the excess aggregate with the tamping rod.

4. Get net weight of aggregate in measure. Compute unit weight by dividing
the net weight by the volume of measure.

C. LOOSE WEIGHT DETERMINATION

1. Fill volumetric measure of overflowing by means of a shovel or scoop.

Discharge the aggregate from a height of about 2 in. from the top of measure.
Exercise care to prevent segregation to of particle sizes.
2. Level-off carefully surface of aggregate.
3. Get net weight of aggregate and compute unit weight by dividing net weight
by volume of measure.

CONCLUSION:
The data reveals that the unit of weight of aggregates in loose and compact was
performed, with the average unit of weight in fine aggregates being 94.80 in loose and
105 in compact, with a combined average of 99.9. The overall average for coarse
aggregates is 106.30, with 100.35 in loose and 112 in compact. And the larger the
average unit, the more force it can exert on the concrete, coarse aggregate is more
powerful than fine aggregate. “Fine aggregates are small size filler materials in
construction,” according to civiltoday.com. Larger size filler materials in construction are
known as coarse aggregates. Particles that move through a 4.75 mm sieve but remain
on a 0.075 mm sieve are referred to as fine aggregates. The particles that retain on a
4.75 mm sieve are coarse aggregates.”
