ANALYSIS OF T-BEAMS
T-BEAMS Reinforced Concrete Design
§ is the result of slabs and beams placed monolithically.
§ The beams have extra widths at their tops called “flanges”.
§ The part of the T-beam below the slab is referred to as the “web” or “stem”.
§ The beam may be called L SHAPED if the stem is at the end of the slab.

§ “T-beam” is NOT exclusive to T-shaped beams.

ANALYSIS OF T-BEAMS Reinforced Concrete Design
Purpose: To determine the design strength of the T-beam, ∅𝑀! .

STEPS IN ANALYSIS OF T-BEAMS:

1. Check 𝐴! as per NSCP 2015 Section 409.6.1.2 or ACI Section 9.6.1.2

NSCP 2015 ACI 318-14
(SI Units) (English Units)

2. Compute the total tensile force 𝑇 = 𝐴! 𝑓" .

3. Equate the total compression force 𝐶 = 0.85𝑓#$ 𝐴# to T and solve for

𝐴# . In this expression, 𝐴# is the assumed area stressed in
compression at 0.85𝑓# ′. The compression force C and the tensile
force T must be equal to maintain equilibrium at the section.

4. Calculate 𝜖% , including a and c. Classify whether tension-controlled,

transition, or compression-controlled. Solve for ∅.

5. Determine ∅𝑀& , which equals to ∅ times T or C times the distance

between their centers of gravity.

EXAMPLE PROBLEM 1 Reinforced Concrete Design
Determine the design strength of the T-beam shown in the figure with 𝑓′! =
27.6 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝑓" = 413.7 𝑀𝑃𝑎. The beam has a 9-m span and is cast integrally with a
floor slab that is 100-mm thick. The clear distance between webs is 1.25 m.
ANALYSIS OF T-BEAMS
EXAMPLE PROBLEM 2 Reinforced Concrete Design
Compute the design strength for the T-beam shown in which 𝑓′! = 27.6 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝑓" =
413.7 𝑀𝑃𝑎.
effective width = 30 in.
