ALLOWABLE STRESSES

(NSCP 2010 vs NSCP 2015)

ALLOWABLE BENDING STRESS
NSCP 2001
The allowable bending stress for timber structures shall be whichever governs according to
NSCP 2010 provisions, which includes adjustments and considerations as follows:

A. Size Adjustment Factor

When the depth of a rectangular sawn lumber bending member 125mm or thicker or
exceeds 300mm, the allowable bending stress, Fb shall be multiplied by Cf.

300 1/9
𝐶𝑓 = ( )
𝑑

Where:
d = depth of the beam

Notes:

1. For circular beam having diameter greater than 340mm, the size factor must be determined
on the basis of an equivalent conventionally loaded square beam.

2. Not applicable to VSG lumber 50mm to 100mm thick or to any MSG Lumber.

CONSIDERING LATERAL STABILITY

Cs, or the slenderness factor is the determining factor for this adjustment. This is applied
to all bending member whose depth exceeds its breadth.

Where:
Cs = Slenderness Factor
Le = effective length of the beam 𝐿𝑒 𝑑
d = depth of the beam 𝐶𝑠 =
b = breadth of the beam

Type of beam and Nature of Load Effective Length, Le

1. Single Span, load concentrated at midspan 1.61Lu

2. Single span, uniformly distributed. 1.92Lu

3. Singe span beam, equal end moments 1.84Lu

4. Cantilever beam, load concentrated at 1.69Lu

unsupported end
5. Cantilever beam, uniformly distributed 1.06Lu
load
6. Cantilever, uniformly load + concentrated 1.69Lu
load at unsupported end
7. Any other Load 1.92Lu

SAMPLE PROBLEM!

1. A wooden beam 200mm x 425mm has a simple span of 6m. If the weight of the beam is
6.3 kN/m3, Using 50% Lauan Timber Lumber, determine the safest “W” this beam
could carry using NSCP 2001 provisions.
