Experiment No. 10
Name of the Experiment: Study of Differentiator & Integrator using operational amplifier .
1. Aim Of The Experiment:
2. Tools Used:
Resistors
Capacitor
Connecting Wires
Op-amp
Signal Generator
Oscilloscope
3. Background knowledge:
a) Differentiator op-amp circuit:
The charge on the capacitor equals Capacitance times Voltage across the capacitor
Q=C x VIN
Thus the rate of change of this charge is:
dQ d V¿
=C ×
dt dt
but dQ/dt is the capacitor current, i
d V¿
IIN=C × =I F
dt
−V out dV
=C ¿
Rf dt
from which we have an ideal voltage output for the op-amp differentiator is given as:
dV
Vout=-Rf C dt ¿
d V out dQ
∴− =
dt Cdt
But dQ/dt is electric current and since the node voltage of the integrating op-amp at its
inverting input terminal is zero, X = 0, the input current I(in) flowing through the input
resistor, Rin is given as:
V ¿−0 V ¿
Iin= R¿
=
R¿
The current flowing through the feedback capacitor C is given as:
d V out dQ dQ d V out C
If=C =C = =
dt Cdt dt dt
Assuming that the input impedance of the op-amp is infinite (ideal op-amp), no current flows
into the op-amp terminal. Therefore, the nodal equation at the inverting input terminal is given
as:
V ¿ d V outC
Iin= If = =
R¿ dt
V¿ dt
∴ × =1
dV out CR ¿
Thus the circuit has the transfer function of an inverting integrator with the gain constant of
-1/RC. The minus sign ( – ) indicates a 180o phase shift because the input signal is connected
directly to the inverting input terminal of the operational amplifier .

4. Conclusion:
After successfully completing the experiment we were able to fulfil all the objectives
of the experiment. We now have a deeper understanding about the working and
structure of Differentiator and Integrator using an operational amplifier. After
plotting of graphs using both square and sinusoidal wave as the input waves we are
able to observe the waveform of the corresponding output wave and confirm the
working of the circuit and shows us the differentiators and integrators using
operational amplifiers.
The waveforms were successfully observed for both differentiator and
integrator circuit and observed waveform nearly matched expected
waveform
