Democracy
I Democracy is a system of government and a way of life. The word democracy means “rule by the
people”. The American Abraham Lincoln described a democratic government as “a government of the
people, by the people, for the people.”
II In a democratic way of life, all people are free and equal. To be free means that all people have the
right to say and do what they choose as long as they don’t harm others. In addition, the government in
a democracy must make sure that people aren’t arrested or imprisoned unlawfully. To be equal means
that people can achieve their goals in life regardless of their sex, their religion or the colour of their
skin.
III In a democracy you have regular elections with more than one political party taking part. Political
decisions are then made by the people who were elected to the job. These decisions are made in the
country’s parliament by majority vote.
