Background of the Study

The town of Barotac Viejo is considered as the

passage toward the north. It has its very own

magnificence to be pleased with. Excellence of nature

and differing society are a portion of the things that

the town brings to the table.

Nueva Invencion is a barangay in the municipality of

Barotac Viejo, in the province of Iloilo. The barangay

is adorned by sprawling hills, high mountains and

rivers.

The municipality of Barotac Viejo has 26 barangays

including the Barangay Nueva Invencion. Nueva Invencion

is about 9.5 km from the town proper of Barotac Viejo.

The population of this barangay was 1,897 this

represented 4.14% of the total population of Barotac

Viejo. With the households 459 as of 2018 survey.

Majority of the residents belong to the youth sector.

The said barangay is divided into 7 sitios namely

Tigbao, Nagsulang, Talapan, Hacienda Bergen, Proper

Icayan and Panun-an. Sitio Nagsulang is one of the

sitios that produces charcoal.

Charcoal is normally obtained from the burning of

wood, peat, bones, or other carbonaceous substances

with little or insufficient air. Charcoal is the dark,

fragile, and coarse form of coal, and is often the

residue of burned wood.

To produce charcoal in ancient times, a pile of

wood was covered with earth and slowly burned for

several days, leaving only enough air to burn and

evaporate gases. This process creates a pure form of

coal. This requires a lot of time and careful

monitoring. However, its charcoal product prefers to be

used as fuel when intense heat is needed and no smoke

is needed.

Pagpanguling is one of the livelihood here in

Barotac Viejo specifically in Nueva Invencion. This

livelihood doesn’t earn much sometimes because, only

few people are using charcoal in cooking.
