What is Linear and Non-Linear Text?

EXPLAIN

 Linear Text
 This most common type text need to be read from beginning to end.
 It focuses on the arrangement of the words, both grammatically and stylistically.
 Generally, text printed on paper are considered as linear text.
 Novels, poems, short stories, letters, educational texts, all those texts we read
from the beginning to the end, are linear texts.

 Non-linear Text
 It refers to text that does not need to be read from beginning to the end.
 Most people consider texts with visuals or graphs along with it as examples of
non-linear texts.
 Not required to be read from beginning to end (non-sequential)
 Examples of non-linear text are charts or graphs.

Different kinds of Non-linear Texts

 Concept Maps
 Typically represents ideas and information as boxes, circle,
and uses lines to show the relationship between them.
 A diagram that shows suggested relationships between
concepts.
 When you draw a concept map, you’re actually creating a
visual image of that subject. A visual that you can analyze to
check your understanding of a subject.
 Concept maps are superior in that sense because not only they
improve processing of facts but also understanding of facts.

 Venn diagram
 A Venn diagram is a visual depiction of the
similarities and differences between two or more
different items. It consists of a series of shapes –
usually circles – whose edges overlap.

 Cause and Effect Diagram

 This diagram emphasizes the connection
between the different concepts and can be
applied to all subjects.

 Flow Chart
 This sequence chart shows series of events in order.
 The arrows signify the flow of the events or details.
 If you have a concept that has steps such as process
or sequence, the flow chart is the applicable textual
aid organizer.

 Graphic Organizer
 This visual display has key content information and
provides learners with

Other forms of Non-Linear Texts are Pie Graph, Spider Map,

Sensory Observation Chart, Line Graph, Bar Graph,
Pictograph, and other related images.

How to transcode LINEAR to NON-LINEAR TEXT and VICE-

VERSA?
 Transcoding linear to non-linear texts and vice-versa is a skill that one to be familiar with,
since it can be use in our everyday lives.

 There will be times when you would have to transcode linear text to non-linear text to make
it easier for other people to understand it and to have a detailed description of a certain
topic.
