INTRODUCTION
News is information about current events. This may be provided through different media:
word of mouth, printing, broadcasting, postal systems, and electronic communication or through
the testimony of the witnesses or observers to events. Common topics for news reports include
war, government, politics, environment, health, economy, business, fashion and entertainment as

writing a news report, use the active voice. Develop short, concise sentences using action verbs.
Your language needs to be simple, without any words that don’t contribute to the focus of the

8 dead after 6.3- magnitude quake strikes Philippines
MANILA- A strong earthquake rocked large parts of the Philippine capital and north of it on
Monday (April 22), killing at least eight, empty buildings of tens of thousands who have just
returned from the long Holy Week holiday, and shutting down rail lines and a key airport.
The United States Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck 60 km north-west
of Manila at a depth of 40 km.
Dozens were rescued from the building in Porac. But at least 30 more were trapped. “It sounded
like a sonic boom,” said Mayor Jose Angelo, of Castillejo’s town, in Zambales province, where
the quake’s epicenter was.

Pampanga, some 90km north of Manila, seems to have borne the brunt of the earthquake.
