POSITIVE

1. It is generally believed that ICTs can empower teachers and learners, promote change and
foster the development of ‘21st century skills, but data to support these beliefs are still
limited
There is widespread belief that ICTs can and will empower teachers and learners,
transforming teaching and learning processes from being highly teacher-dominated to student-
centered, and that this transformation will result in increased learning gains for students, creating
and allowing for opportunities for learners to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities,
informational reasoning skills, communication skills, and other higher-order thinking skills.
However, there are currently very limited, unequivocally compelling data to support this belief..
2. Information:
The one thing that no one can deny is that the various advances in the field of ICT
have made it possible for us to access information right away. In fact, this is the very reason why
ICT has been commercially utilized across several industry verticals and what’s more, ICT makes
it possible to collate and categorize information, run analysis on the same and even help
companies determine their prospects, current trends and help chart their future course of action.

3. Education:
Thanks to ICT, it is now possible to mass produce essential school supplies at lower
cost, host online classes for those who cannot afford to go to schools and much more. With ICT,
our education system had undergone an overhaul, resulting in better educational formats, and the
students are better off, as a result of the same.

Impact on student achievement

1. ICTs are used differently in different school subjects
Uses of ICTs for simulations and modeling in science and math have been shown to be effective,
as have word processing and communication software (e-mail) in the development of student
language and communication skills.
2. Users believe that ICTs make a positive difference
In studies that rely largely on self-reporting, most users feel that using ICTs make them more
effective learners.

Impact on student motivation

1. ICTs motivate teachers and students
There appears to be a general consensus that both teachers and students feel ICT use greatly
contributes to student motivation for learning.
2. ICTs can promote learner autonomy
Evidence exists that use of ICTs can increase learner autonomy for certain learners.
NEGATIVE
1. Addiction: Some ICT related products have proved to be more harmful than others – such as
gaming, mobile phones etc. As a result, young vulnerable teens often get addicted to online
gaming, often playing the same for several hours. This often leads to their health being impacted,
especially their vision.

2. The result of the findings showed that ICT can take away valuable learning time, it can be
overused, also it can turn educational experiences into games for students and thus enhances low
academic performances, it also exposes students to porn sites and can distract them during class
hours.

3. Reduction of learning rate; Students use to go to tutors and also consult books to help them do
their assignments. They also used to learn overnight to prepare them for the next class. It does not
happen anymore because they just do ‘cut’ and ‘paste’ from the internet and does not necessarily
learn what they are cutting and pasting. They can fetch information on the internet just before
class and answer questions in class which will lure the tutor into thinking that they have really
learnt before the class until they write a test or exams.
