EMPLOYEE WELL BEING

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been an

unprecedented event, disrupting our way of life and causing increased stress and

anxiety for workers everywhere. The employee wellbeing is the way employees’

work, expectations, workplace affects their overall health and happiness especially in

this pandemic. Last September 13, 2021 at 1:00 PM, I conducted an interview with

my thirteen colleagues in my workplace at Basag National High School. I followed

the four dimensions of employee wellbeing: Social Wellness, Emotional Wellness,

Environmental Wellness and Physical Wellness ( The Real Meaning of Employee Wellbeing

| Keka).

In first dimension which is the social wellness, all 13 teachers

responded that this time of pandemic, there is stronger positive relationship in them

between the parents since everyday they transact with the parents. The constant

communication and sincerity bring closer together as the teachers feel more involved

with the community. In second dimension which is the emotional wellness, 8 out of

13 teachers responded that they were not emotionally well because when pandemic

started, they have lots of paper works and reports to do and they have less time to

focus on teaching process. Especially the school (organization) now has its

validation for regional SBM level 3, there is frequent overtime in the school just to
finish the job/documents. The other 5 teachers responded that they like go with the

flow with the environment that they can still manage their emotion and can continue

to work passionately. In the next dimension which is environmental wellness, 8 out of

13 teachers responded that we have this tiredness environment. I also experience

this because I frequently sleep late at night to finish reports/monitoring PowerPoint

presentation/ video presentation/ given by our school head. Maybe because of the

preparation of SBM also, I always feel tired in going to school and I can’t see that

bright spark anymore. The remaining 5 teachers said that the big factor affecting the

decrease of our motivation is the school head. The last dimension is the physical

wellness. Since there was a memo about the teachers in the situation of going to

school (there is again outbreak of covid cases in Butuan), all the teachers in Basag

National High School still everyday onsite. Our school head instructed us to continue

the preparation and work in school despite of the covid 19 crises. Therefore, our

school head didn’t care about his teachers’ welfare.

I observed that most of my colleagues are struggling this time of pandemic.

There still adjustments of the situation of not having face to face classes and there

are lot more paper works to do. Our school head is not helping and just contribute

more pressure to us. Maybe he did not take this subject Executive Leadership that is

why he has no idea on the proper way of managing a certain organization or how to

become a great leader. As a leader, I should have this incredible impact on the lives

of those I lead. So, it's my job to create conditions where my employees feel

empowered and can thrive. Ultimately, the best way to create the right environment

is to be the best version of myself and support my team the way I would like to be

supported: fully, respectfully and compassionately. Therefore, first need to consider

is the wellbeing of my employees. A certain leader in an organization will not be

productive if the employees are ill-being. It should be, employee well-being starts

with me (leader). I will think about my employee’s well-being holistically.
