1. a) Define per unit quantity. Mention the advantages of per unit system. 04M CO1 L1
b) The schematic diagram of a power system is shown in fig1(b). A load of
60MW at 0.9 PF is tapped at 60 kV, determine the terminal voltage at bus-1.

c) With the help of oscillograms of short circuit current, of a synchronous


generator operating on no load, distinguish between sub transient, transient &

2. a) What is single line diagram? Explain the procedure of drawing impedance
diagram. List the assumptions made. 08 M CO1 L 1

b) A 15 MVA, 10.5 kV, 3-phase generator as a sub transient reactance of 20%


transformer. It is connected through a ∆-Y transformer to a high voltage
transmission line having a total series reactance of 70 Ω. The load end of the
line has Y-Y step down transformer. Both transformer banks are composed of
single phase transformers connected for 3-phase operation. Each of three
transformer composing 3-phase bank is rated 6667KV, 10/100kv, with a 12 M CO1 L4,5
reactance of 10%. The load represented as impedance, is drawing 10MVA at
12.5KV and 0.8pf lagging. Draw the single line diagram of the power network.
Choose a base of 10MVA, 12.5KV in the load circuit and drawthe reactance
diagram. Determine also the voltage at the terminals of the generator.

3. a) What are symmetrical components? How are they useful in the solution of
power system? 04M CO2 L 1

b) Derive the expression for 3 -phase power in terms of symmetrical components. CO2

c) A delta connected balanced load connected to a 3 phase supply is drawing a
current of 10 L-30o & 15 L-60o in lines A & B. Calculate the symmetrical 08 M CO2 L 3
components of the currents.

4. a) Derive an expression for the 3 phase complex power in terms of symmetrical
components. 06 M CO2 L 3

b) A delta connected balanced load is connected to three phase supply. One line
of supply is open. The current in other two lines are 20A. Calculate the 06 M CO2

sequence components of the line and phase currents.

c) The three line voltages of a three phase system are 400, 500, & 600 volts.

Determine the sequence components of line & phase voltages. Hence find the L5
phase voltages if zero sequence phase voltages are absent.

5. a) A double line to ground (L-L-G) fault is occurred at the terminals of an


unloaded alternator. Describe the analysis of the system using symmetrical
components. Derive the expression for fault current in terms of sequence 10 M CO3 L2,5
components and arrive to inter-connection of sequence networks.

b) Draw the sequence networks for the system shown in the fig_5(b). Determine
the fault current for a line to line fault occurs at F. The per unit reactance’s all
referred on same base are as follows. Both the generators are generating at 1.0
per unit.

6. a) A double line (L-L) fault is occurred at the terminals of an unloaded star


connected alternator. Discuss the analysis of the system using symmetrical
components and obtain the expression for fault current in terms of sequence 10 M CO3
L2,4
impedances and hence draw the inter connection diagram of sequence
networks.

b) A single line to ground fault occurs at midpoint F of the transmission line in 10 M CO3 L5
power system shown in fig-3(b). Determine the fault current in pu & in amps
from the generator if the system is on no load and at a voltage of 100 kV at the
fault point. Use base of 50 MVA, 110kV in transmission line circuit.

7. a) Define inertia constants M & H for a synchronous machine. How are they

b) What are the assumptions made in stability studies? How do you justify them? 06 M CO4

c) A synchronous motor is receiving 25% of the power that it capable of receiving
from an infinite bus. If the load on the motor is doubled, calculate the

c) Evaluate the steady state power limit of a two machine system consisting of a
synchronous generator with an equivalent reactance of 0.5 pu connected to an
10 M CO4 L 5
infinite bus through a reactance of 1 pu. The terminal voltage is held at 1.2 pu
and the voltage of the infinite bus is 1pu.

9. a) Explain the open conductor faults in a power system. Draw the inter
connection of sequence networks. 10 M CO5 L 2

b) A three phase induction motor is under normal conditions. The line ‘a’ gets 10 M CO5
opened accidentally. Develop the expression for torque and power output. L6

10 a) Explain the effect of unbalanced voltage on the performance of three phase
induction motor. Obtain the expressions for power and torque developed under 10 M CO5

such operating conditions.

b) A 400 V, 4 Pole, 50Hz, 3 phase, induction motor with R 1= R2E= 0.4 Ω and X1=
X2E= 1.8 Ω is running at 1420 RPM with a line open. Solve the system for 10 M CO5 L 6
torque and power developed
