The Deadline
3/3

Maggie: Hi Tom, have you finished your homework?

Tom: Oh hi Maggie. No, I haven’t.
Maggie: The deadline is tomorrow you know so you have to submit it tomorrow.
Tom: I can’t make it. I haven’t even started it yet. Can we hand it in next week?
Maggie: I don’t know. You’ll have to ask Mrs. Robinson about that. I think you must finish it by tomorrow. She probably
won’t accept projects after tomorrow.
Tom: I’ve had so many other things to do. I couldn’t even start it. I don’t know what to do.
Maggie: Don’t worry. I’ll help you. It’s not very difficult. I finished it in one day.
Tom: Really? Great!
Maggie: First, you should read the article that Mrs. Robinson gave us. It’s about the Mohican Civilization. Then, you
have to design a poster for a play about them – the Mohicans – for the theatre.
Tom: Yeah I know but it looks a bit difficult…
Maggie: Not at all. You don’t have to make the poster from scratch and it doesn’t have to be a work of art. There are
lots of templates on the internet. You can just use one of those designs to make your own poster.
Tom: Well, I think I can do it. What title shall I use? Can you help me?

Maggie: Yeah, I can give you some suggestions but you mustn’t use the same title as anyone else in our class. You
have to create your own title.
Tom: Okay, I can come up with something I guess.
Maggie: Alright?
Tom: Yeah, I’ve got to go now and make a start on it. I’ll follow the project guidelines like you said. Thanks, Maggie.
Maggie: No problem. Good
theluck!

hotels?
E.g. Hotel rooms, hotel staff, check
in, check out, installations, etc.)
- What do you dislike?

B The Modal Hotel features two

outdoor pools in beautifully
landscaped grounds. It also
has a spa and two restau-
rants. It is a five-minute walk
from the night market and
city center.
Your group has just taken over management of the hotel. Look at the following information and
decide what rules you are going to have in the hotel. Use modal verbs of obligation and
prohibition to create the rules.
E.g.: Guests must check out before midday. Staff don´t have to work weekends .
Guests Rules
Rooms must close the room when they leave
Leave key when guests go out? they must have clean the bedroom
Smoking in the room? must smoke in the park
Wi-Fi access? Cost?
Meals you must eat at your time
Breakfast start/finish time? must wash the plate
Breakfast included/not included? you must eat healthy
Book a table for lunch/dinner? you must reserve a table
Staff Rules
Wear a uniform? must work in uniform
Work weekends? must work only during the week
Holiday leave? must have a vacation license

C Role Play.
With these rules create a situation where some of you act as guests and the others as a part of
the staff, then, performance it to your partners.

Confidential
Case History
I evaluated the patient Johan Martin Keeds , age 17, for an undiagnosed psychiatric problem at 3:40 p.m., on
Thursday, March 6. When the patient arrived, she was conscious but uncommunicative, which is not unusual in
these kind of cases. After she had time to calm down, she related her story; at least, the parts she could
remember.
Ms. Keeds claims that a man attacked her on Welham Road. What is unusual about her story is that she
describes the man as having green skin. She claims that the man grabbed her and began to pull her into the
trees near the side of the road. At this point, she apparently fell to the ground unconscious.
NOTE: I later talked to the couple that brought the girl in. They claim that, because they are new to town, they are
still unfamiliar with many of the roads in the backcountry. According to the husband, they were driving down
Welham Road when they saw a young girl struggling with an unknown assailant. When the man saw the car, he
released the girl and ran into the woods. His whereabouts are unknown. The couple put the unconscious girl in
the car and brought her to the hospital.
Conclusions
Frankly, I find the girl´s story of a man with green skin unbelievable. While I’m sure that something unpleasant
happened to the girl, she is clearly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and is unsure of exactly what
she remembers. She may have invented the idea of this ‘green man’ as a way of dealing with an unbearable
situation.
Recommendations
I recommend that Ms. Keeds remains in the hospital under observation for the next 48 hours. The staff should
not leave her unattended at any time. I also recommend a series of neurological tests to determine if she has an
undiscovered condition that might be causing visual hallucinations.

B PRONUNCIATION
Listen and repeat the following words.

diagnosed – undiagnosed
conscious – unconscious
believable – unbelievable
bearable – unbearable

C Underline the stressed syllables of the words above.

D Is there a change in stress when the prefix ‘un’ is added?

She’s a Winner!
Few people would disagree that track star
Wilma Rudolph was lightning fast. In the late
1950s and early 1960s, Americans discovered
Rudolph. She was the first American woman to
win three gold medals in one Olympic Game.
Born in a poor family, young Wilma wore a
brace on her left leg. Back then it was easy to
discount her chances for success. But Wilma
was not discouraged by her disability. She took
off her brace every time she could. As her legs
grew stronger, her discomfort disappeared.

Supervisor: When you finish, put the money in the safe and lock it. The key is in the desk drawer. Close all the doors and windows.
Don’t forget the bathroom window. That one is often open. Don’t bother switching the computers off – sometimes they need to
update. Don’t worry about the answerphone – it comes on automatically after seven rings. Switch off the lights and set the alarm.
The code is 1973. Remember you must swipe your card to sign out. Leave the car park gate. The shop next door closes late and
they shut the gate. Audio 2 Transcript

Employee: So, have I got this right – I don’t need to switch the computers off?

Supervisor: That’s right.

Employee: And let me check – should I switch the answerphone on or not?

Supervisor: No. You don’t need to.

Employee: Can you tell me again the code for the alarm?

Man: The most unusual experience of my life happened when I was ten years old. In those days, we lived in a small town in the
country. There wasn´t much to do in that town, so sometimes people would tell stories to pass the time. And the most popular story
was always about The Green Man.

Presenter: What do you think people would say about the Green Man?

Man: The Green Man was believed to have lived in the woods near the river, and sometimes took children away with him. Parents
would warn their children that if they didn´t behave, the Green Man would come for them. None of us believed this, of course; we
all thought that a strange man living in the woods was unlikely.

My favorite activity in those days was to go fishing down by the river that ran near the edge of town. To get there, I had to walk
through the woods when the Green Man was supposed to live. On this particular afternoon, as I was preparing to leave, my brother
tried to scare me. He said, “Don´t stay out too late, or the Green Man will get you!”. I just laughed and went out, completely
unafraid.

When I arrived at my fishing spot, the afternoon sun made me sleepy. I lay my head back against a tree, and the next thing I knew the
sun has gone down and night was coming. I realized that it would be dark soon, so I quickly got my things and started back home.

Presenter: What do you thing happened next?

Man: I walked through the woods without trouble, but when I got to the road, I noticed the figure of a man standing near some
trees on the other side. As I got nearer, I saw that the man had green skin. He was dressed in old clothes that hung off his body in
rags, and he has his nose in the air as if he were trying to smell something.

It´s is the Green Man I thought, but it was too surprised to be afraid; the whole situation seemed unreal. That is, until the Green
Man noticed me. He stopped and when our eyes met, he gave me a smile; not a nice smile, but a smile that said: “I´m going to eat
you now.” I was frozen in place, unable to move, until the Green Man started walking towards me.

Presenter: What do you think the man did next?

That was enough to get the moving. I dropped my fishing pole and started running down the road as fast as I could. After a few
minutes, I stopped to rest, but when I turned around, I saw that the Green Man was running towards me, his hands with their long
filthy nails reaching for me.

My dad saw how upset I was, and asked me what had happened. I told him about Green Man. He didn´t believe me at first, but
then he agreed to go back down the road with me to investigate. We found my pole where I had dropped it, but there was no sign
of the Green Man. To this day, the experience remains an unexplained mystery.

Presenter: Do you think the man´s experience with the Green Man has been real? Explain your answer.
