Case study on Personality and Emotions

According to Merriam-Webster Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is a number used to

express the apparent relative intelligence of a person. Whereas Emotional
Quotient (EQ) is defined as an individual’s ability to sense, understand and
effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions to facilitate higher levels of
collaboration and productivity. The Case enlightens us about how important EI
and EQ is in a working professional’s life. Clearly Ravi’s EI and EQ is very low when
compared to that of Sunil’s. Ravi will always face issues in his working tenure due
to his arrogance and failure to know and interact with his peers. Sunil on the
other hand very successfully got to know his co-workers, maintained cordial
relationship with them played the role of a team player, showed empathy to
juniors and welcomed additional responsibility with grace and enthusiasm.

IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is a measuring unit for our intelligence potential, which

has no direct relationship to our present intelligence. It is the EQ (Emotional
Quotient) which makes you socially active and creative. EI (Emotional Intelligence)
is the heightened awareness of others' emotions, including your own. The most
successful professionals thrive in their respective fields due to their EQ, not IQ.
Emotional Intelligence is widely recognized as a valuable skill that helps improve
communication, management, problem-solving, and relationships within the
workplace. It is a skill which may not always be inherited or one is born with but
can be improved with training and practice.

Having bookish knowledge is definitely helpful to be an effective employee but

when we face the real world after completing our education and land into any
organisation the real learning starts from there. Although we use our academic
learning and acquired skills to resolve issues but what is more important is to
keep our Emotional intelligence high because that is what keeps us going and
surviving in an organisation in more effective way.
The areas which clearly show that Ravi’s EQ is very low are:
 Ravi was transferred every six months was very much related to his low EI.
One cannot run a business or lead an organisation just by sitting in front of
a computer screen, instead he/she needs to work as a team with the
assistance of co-workers. Letting your co-workers down all the time and
dominating them by showing your authoritative power will lead you in
trouble one day.

 With low EQ Ravi doesn’t feel comfortable at his workplace and always
complain about incompetency of his peers, he fails to learn practical
knowledge, he always wish he had another job and if had good friends, he
fails to take quick decisions, will never be able to keep a positive and fun
environment in his work place due to which he never be able to get
satisfaction and his overall happiness will also be affected.

The areas which clearly show that Sunil’s EQ is high are:

 In case of Sunil even though he is academically one step back compared to
Ravi. He is more affective at work due to his high EI and EQ, he never fails
to accept new challenges and find solutions to it because of which He will
be able to explore new aspects of work and will keep on adding new
dimensions to his skills through practical learnings. His co-workers will
always adore him and will be very supportive at his work. His work
environment will also be fun and positive. This will affect his overall
performance and will be more productive when compared to Ravi.
Having higher EQ Emotional Intelligence is important for effective leadership and
executives, management and supervisory staff, customer service, sales and
marketing staff, HR Human. Resources staff and others in businesses of all sizes
and in all markets and industries. Higher EQ Emotional Intelligence helps
individuals to communicate better, promote team effort and problem solve with
individuals when needed and promote team effort.

In a nutshell we can conclude that the case depicts about how important EI and
EQ is in a working professional’s life and with the combination of good academic
records and high EI and EQ one can very successfully lead his/her organisation
and learn a lot form the practical experience throughout the journey.
With all this done the importance of effective mix of EQ and IQ level is very crucial
and its importance can be best expressed by this quote:
If your emotional abilities aren't in hand, if you don't have self-awareness, if you
are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can't have empathy and
have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going
to get very far. -Daniel Goleman
