WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS
General Chemistry 1 - Grade 12, Quarter 1, Week 1(Part C)

Consumer Products

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

Compare consumer products on the basis of their components for use, safety, quality and
cost (STEM_GC11MPIa-b-11)

Learning Objectives:
1. Compare some consumer products based on its components for use, safety, quality and
cost.
2. Identify the importance of knowing the components of consumer products in relation to
use, safety, quality and cost.
3. Apply the concept of knowing the consumer products before consuming.

Time Allotment: 1 hour

Key Concepts
Consumer products, or final goods, are goods that are being sold and are bought by
individuals for consumption. We use these products every day, from the food that we eat, the
medicines that we need to take specially during this time of pandemic, to cleaning our bodies and
even the cars and any other vehicles that we acquire for transport, all of these are called consumer
products.

Since we consume these products every day, it is of importance to know what these products
are composed of specially the products that we need to take inside our body. The main reason is
for awareness. Just like any other matter, there are positive and negative impact consumer
products give. These consumer products are made to help us have an easier life, it is available in
the market because of their usefulness. However, the same consumer products may cause harm
to some. Now, when is a consumer product may post danger if it is very useful to us? A consumer
product may cause harm for two primary reasons:
1. Abuse or misuse of product. A good example of this would be the solvent like rugby
that was invented to use as an adhesive material. But for some instances, the same
solvent is being used by drug dependent.
2. If a consumer product is intended to cause harm such as gun powder and poisons.

The Science, Technology and Society are interconnected with one another since a change
in one aspect triggers a change to the other. That is, improvement in science due to the latest
discoveries made by scientists and professionals, the society, causes changes in the technology
such that of the consumer products we use every day. This is the reason why also, there are a lot
of products of the same usage but of slightly different compositions we have to choose from in the
market. There is a continuous improvement in the compositions of each consumer product as the
new discoveries come in for the betterment in terms of its uses, safety and cost.

As consumers, we are responsible to be informed and knowledgeable of all the things we

consume. We need to know, not only to make us safe but also to make us save.

Activity 2. CHECKka Muna!

Learning Objective: Identify the importance of knowing the components of consumer products
in relation to use, safety, quality and cost.
What you need: pen and paper
What to do: Choose two (2) consumer products available in your household that you want to
investigate in terms of chemical composition, usage, safety and cost.

Guide Question:

How important is knowing the consumer products basing on their composition, usage,
safety and cost?

(Note: Refer to page 3 for the rubric in scoring)

Reflection:

We are now faced with an event that nobody thought would come, the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since March of 2020, protocols were set, a lot of changes were observed to prevent being infected
with the virus. A clean hand can prevent being sick with Covid-19 that is why we are advised to
wash our hands properly or use rubbing alcohol all the time. What is in the soap and rubbing
alcohol that can prevent the spread of the virus?

(Note: Refer to page 3 for the rubric in scoring)

Answer Key
Activity 1: Sinampoo Ko Lang Yan
Possible answer to guide question but answers may vary.
Acidic shampoo contains citric acid in which it brings pH level down that improves hair’s
appearance and manageability by reducing frizz while Alkaline shampoo contains Sodium
hydroxide that is used for cleansing and denaturing agent that holds the ph of a product.
Both shampoos are generally safe when used in a low to moderate level and are harmful
when used in a high concentration.
Activity 2: CHECKka Muna!
Consumer Some chemical Usage Safety Cost

Glycerin (C3H8O3) • Cure skin available
infection
Possible answer to guide questions in Activity 2.
It is very important for our own sake. Awareness is essential for us to be safe and to be able
to save. Knowing all of these helps us choose the right products as well.
Reflection:
Antibacterial soap usually contains chloroxylenol or C8H9OCl which is an antiseptic and
disinfectant used in skin for disinfection. Rubbing alcohol is an alcoholic mixture to be used
externally to disinfect. It is usually composed of isopropyl alcohol or C3H8O which has a
germicidal action, meaning it can kill bacteria and viruses.
