got a relief in the High Court
as it directed the police not to
initiate any action on him.
In the wake of public outrage
by the former minister recent-
ly, targeting several ministers
and the ruling YSR Congress
leaders with his abusive lan-
guage, police booked a case on
him under the provisions of
SC and ST (Prevention of
Atrocities) Act, 1989. However,
he moved the High Court.
Accordingly, the HC in an
interim order directed the
police not to proceed further
in the case until further

The state government tabled a
Bill, the Telangana State
Prevention of Touting and
Malpractices against Tourists
and Travellers Act, 2021, in the
Assembly on Friday with a
view to protecting visitors.
The House is likely to pass the
Bill on Monday after a discus-
sion.
Minister for home Mohd
Mahmood Ali introduced the
Bill which defines ‘tourist’ or
‘traveller’ as any person or
group of persons including
pilgrims who visit Telangana
state from any part of India or
outside India.
It defines ‘touting’ as acts of
enticing, misguiding or coerc-
ing tourists for shopping,
accommodation, transporta-
tion, sight-seeing or pestering
for use of any particular prem-
ises the precincts thereof, any
person, establishment, dealer
or manufacturer for personal
consideration.
“A person who abets the
offence will also be punished
with imprisonment for a term
which may extend to six
months or with fine which
may extend to `5,000 or both,”
the Bill says.
The Bill provides for powers
of arrest, search and seizure
to a police officer not below
the rank of an assistant sub-
inspector, if he or she notices
an offence of malpractice or
touting.
The decision to bring in leg-
islation in this regard was
taken in view of rampant
cases of touting at several
places in the state, especially
in the city including at the air-
port, railway stations, inter-
state bus terminus and hotels.

treatment to the infected
patients and other works
like fever survey and so
on. With no regular con-

ences, they have failed to
earn 30 credit hours.

tion of roads in the state
and said the pothole-rid-
den roads are living proof
of the failure of the YSR
Congress government.
Addressing the media at
the Telugu Desam office
in Mangalagiri, the for-
mer minister said all the
roads in the state had
turned into hellholes, as
the R&B department
stopped functioning in the
state.
“There is no movement
in the government even as
hundreds of people are
losing their lives in the
potholes,” he said.
“The `4,500 crore project
which took off during the
TD term under the AIB
was stopped after the
YSRC came to power.
Though the TD govern-
ment secured approvals
for `6,400 crore loans
under the NDB, the YSRC
government lost it. The
Jagan government was in
a predicament of not
being able to give match-
ing grants to be paid
under the state share”, he
said.
Saying that the state
ministers have completely
blown away their depart-
ments for fear of how long
their positions will last,

“When this government
came, it stopped all those
works because the state
has no money to pay its
share. Of these 44 pack-
ages, work was done only
in Nellore and Chittoor
districts, while the
remaining 11 districts
were left to their fate,” he

A fight over show of strength
near a private school in
Visakhapatnam led to the
death of a 13-year-old student
on Thursday evening.
A senior police officer said
that Jaswant had been chal-
lenged by a student and his
friends over his strength. Both
decided to fight to prove the
same after school. They left
the school at about 4.30 pm and
selected a spot about 200
metres from the school. Two
other boys stood as witnesses.
Jaswant faced a volley of
blows and one of them landed
on his chest.
He collapsed and fell uncon-
scious. The boys rushed back
to school and informed their
teachers. They took the boy to
King George Hospital, where
doctors declared Jaswant dead
on arrival.
The school management
declared a holiday for students
on Friday. The Fourth Town
police have registered a case.
The student in conflict with
law will be produced before
Juvenile Justice Board and
sent to a juvenile home, the

A simple pill to treat the
coronavirus has been
sought since the start of
the pandemic and Friday's
announcement was hailed
as a major step towards
that goal.
“With these compelling
results, we are optimistic
that molnupiravir can
become an important
medicine as part of the
global effort to fight the
pandemic,” said Robert
Davis, the company’s CEO
and president, in a state-
ment.
Peter Horby, a professor
of emerging infectious
diseases at the University
of Oxford, called the inter-
im results “very encourag-
ing.” He added: “A safe,
affordable, and effective
oral antiviral would be a
huge advance in the fight
against Covid.”But
experts also cautioned
they would like to see the
complete underlying data,
and stressed that if even-
tually approved the drug
should complement highly
effective vaccines, rather
than be taken instead of
them.
In a late stage clinical
trial, Merck and its part-
ner Ridgeback
Therapeutics evaluated
data from 775 patients —
roughly half of whom
received either a five-day
course of the pill, while
the other received a place-
bo.
All the patients had lab-
confirmed Covid-19 with
symptoms that developed
within five days of them
being assigned to their
respective groups.
Of the patients who
received molnupiravir, 7.3
percent were hospitalized
by day 29, compared to 14.1
percent of those on a
placebo — a relative risk
reduction of around 50
after 18 months

tures, she eventually fell
in love with an Italian
fighter pilot named
Vittorio Andriani. “I did-
n’t see too much of him
because he was always
fighting someplace,”
Primetta told the Golden
Gate Wing, a military avi-
ation club in Oakland,
California, in 2008.
Italy entered World War
II in June 1940. The local
police warned Primetta to
leave because Mussolini

Florida: At a laboratory in
central Florida, biologist
Aaron Gavin uses tiny
pipettes to carefully feed
shrimp to more than 700
corals living in huge saltwa-
ter tanks, with sunlight-
mimicking lamps glowing
above them. The work of the
scientists here could be the
last chance to save the
species that make up the
only coral reef in the United
States’ continental waters.
Gavin and his team have
diligently recreated the
coral reef habitat found in
the waters off the southern
tip of the state, complete
with artificial currents and
local fish. They hope to pre-
vent the 18 species of coral
in their care from suffering
the same mysterious ail-
ment, called SCTLD (stony
coral tissue loss disease),
that is afflicting their wild
cousins.
Among the sprawling man-
groves and darting schools
of fish off the Florida Keys,
the damaged corals -- nor-
mally dark -- now appear as
large white patches on the
floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
The situation is the same all
along the Florida Reef
Tract, which stretches 580
kms from the Dry Tortugas,
which are the westernmost
islands in the Florida Keys,
all the way to the town of St
Lucie, located about 200 kms
north of Miami.
“It’s heartbreaking, and I
think the most alarming
(thing) about it is that most
people don’t know it’s hap-
pening,” said Michelle
Ashton, the communica-
tions director of the Fish
and Wildlife Foundation of

corals safely and healthy in

the Orlando-based lab,
which opened in 2020 and is
managed by aquatic theme
park company SeaWorld. “If
they were still in the wild,
up to 90 percent of them
would have been dead,”
Zimmerman said.
The potentially catastroph-
ic SCTLD was first discov-
ered in 2014, near Miami,
and has continued to spread
rapidly, killing about half of
stony coral species, a cor-
nerstone of marine biodiver-
sity. The disease, whose
causes are unknown, is now
plaguing the animals fur-
ther into the Caribbean, all
the way in Mexico and
Belize.
The rescue lab’s work is
part of a project created in
2018 by the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Associa-
tion and the Florida Fish
and Wildlife Conservation
Commission, and includes
dozens of public and private
organizations.
The group, faced with the
threat of more than 20 of the
45 species of hard corals in
the area going extinct,
devised the unprecedented
plan to extract healthy
corals from the region’s
waters and care for them in
these artificially equipped
aquariums in the hope they
can be returned to their wild
habitats in the future. “You
are looking at the future of
Florida Reef Tract in this
room,” Aston said of the
corals in the Orlando aquar-
iums. “And their grandchil-
dren will be what goes back
out to the water.”
The first part of the rescue
plan has allowed wildlife
authorities to save nearly
2,000 colonies of corals, now
stored at more than 20 insti-
tutions in 14 different states.
The second part of the plan
requires researchers to suc-
cessfully return the corals to
the ocean -- though such an
operation would likely take
place a long time from now,
as corals reproduce very
slowly.
The scientists are studying
the genetics of the rescued
animals in an effort to culti-
vate new specimens that
could be more resistant to
disease, as well as other
threats such as warming
water temperatures and pol-
lution. The success or fail-
ure of these endeavours
could have huge conse-
quences for the region.
Stony corals, made up of
limestone skeletons, are
what create coral reefs,
which in turn provide a
home for a quarter of
marine life. Plus, the struc-
tures are natural barriers
between the open ocean and
land, reducing the strength
of waves that hit the coast-
line, especially during hur-
ricanes and other storms.
And a hit to coral health
could mean a hit to Florida
tourism revenue, as one
study estimated that visitors
drawn to the state for fishing
and diving along the reef
generate $8.5 billion.

Campbell, 59, is worried
about what comes next. He is
sitting next to the small
tourist boat he captains, cur-
rently anchored in the port.
He said the coral disease has
already had an impact on his
business. “I’ve been in the
Florida Keys now for 20
years, and I’m out on the
water every day,” he said.
“Obviously we make our liv-
ing out here, so we take peo-
ple out to the reef for the
enjoyment of seeing the
reef. So for us it’s extremely
important.”

ing further details.
In recent days, Pele published
several pictures and videos on
social media showing his recov-
ery process in the hospital. The

women’s day/night match
against Australia here on
Friday.
India were 276 for five in

forced the players indoors
some time after the dinner
break, meaning more than
a session’s play was wast-
ed due to inclement weath-
er. The lightning was fol-
lowed by rain, rendering
the outfield wet. The
Carrara Oval’s excellent
drainage system notwith-
standing, play could not
resume as the outfield
needed more than a few
hours to dry, even after the
super-sopper was
employed by the proactive
ground-staff.
The umpires inspected
at 8.30 pm local time
before arriving at the deci-
sion to call off the remain-
ing day’s play, the second
time after a similar expe-
rience during the opening
day’s play on Thursday.
