To begin with, our world is compose of a lot of different cultures. We, people live in a

world where culture define us. Culture defining who we are and it makes us belong to

the world. It was said that “ culture consist of activities such as the arts and philosophy,

which are considered to be important for the development of civilization and of people’s

mind”. Therefore, culture has an imperative role in our lives.

Geisha means ‘ a Japanese hostess trained to entertain in men with conversation,

dance and song’, that is actually portrait in the movie. But geisha in a broader sense

they are called a ‘performing artist’ or ‘women of art’. Although, being a geisha means

you tend to sell your body through sex , it looks like they consider it as a privileged. And

also, being a geisha means being orderly, disciplined and neat. I noticed that they look

like a family. Wherein there’s a mother who teach and instruct the girls or her daughters

on what appropriate things to do and nurturing their behaviors and there’s these sisters

who assist and support each other.

Though geisha is somewhat privileged to other woman, I think it’s not that easy to be

like one. You had a lot of circumstances and obstacles to accomplish for you to be a

geisha. As shown in the movie that they are not a usual hostess but a presentable one.

Along with their culture is the appropriate finery and good appearance. They bear to

wear a heavy kimono not one but many and a heavy slipper and put a lot of make up to

make them good. In that way you can see that they have too much perseverance.
When chiyo becomes sayuri, she became one of the most known geisha because of

her inherent beauty and magnetism. That it come to the point where in the other geisha

became more envious of her. I think, the reason why she’s so diligence to become a

geisha is because she wanted to be seen again and be worthy to the man she saw back

when she is still a kid who happened to be the first person that showed kindness and

passion to her. She did everything to be a geisha to notice by the chairman who she fell

in love with. But then, looks like the chairman show no interest to chiyo, so when they

go to a trip, her fate to be with the chairman and to confess her true feelings did not

happen.. Her friend pumpkin sabotage the situation by bringing the chairman to the

place where she and nobu is doing something. It’s surprising that pumpkin did it

because she is angry of her because ‘sayuri took away her rightful place as her

mother’s daughter and the heir of the nitta okiya’. I thought pumpkin is happy for her

achievements I didn’t think that pumpkin envied her. And the most surprising is that the

chairman has a feelings to chayo and ‘it was him who set mameha to find the girl with

blue eyes and ensure that she was taken good care of and so she will be reunited with

him.

How hard it is to be imprisoned in a room? In a room where things are limited? Where

you cannot see the whole world- that, that room is only the world, the real world? Joy

and Jack’s situation is really hard to handle. Jack believes that those things inside the

room are only the things that exist. Those he watched in television is not real but

somewhat magic. Jack tend to talk to chairs, tables, cupboard because he thought

those are only the things he may consider real.

Joy and jack were different from other families in the way they communicate. Jack is

afraid and aloof to communicate to other people because he is not used to talk and to

see another person except his ma and the old nick before. He is still in the process of

coping up and gradually embracing and accepting that those people and things that

surrounds him is real. When someone wanted to talked to him, he immediately ran into

his ma’s back. He answers by whispering it to his ma. He really wasn’t able to talk to

others. There are things that only the two of them could know and understand. Their

communication is somewhat bizzare, like the “tooth and hair” that according to them

those are the source of their strength.

Perhaps the barrier in terms of communicating to other people in the movie is that

there’s a fear in their heart and they are somehow traumatized due to being imprisoned

for a long time. Joy became depressed cause she thought no one can understand her

feelings and their situation so she came up of thinking too much that it affected her

badly. But later on, gradually they cope in a massive traumatic incident and jack was
finally able to interact and socialize to other person without fear and uncomfortable

feeling.

Joy and jack used aggressive and assertive communication style because at first. Jack

wants to talk to her mother about the true world. Jack voice is strong while talking to her

mother. And when jack and joy go outside the room. joy and jack used assertive style to

communicate in others because while jack to others what he said is true and strong.

Jack and Joy has a big difference to the other family because of what they experience

and because they lock up in that small room for 7 years. When they escape that room

and see the true world all the things for them become a challenge, it was the different

culture of other people. Jack didn't know whose real or not even to himself, he didn't

know if he's real or not, whereas it was a challenge to joy how to communicate to the

other people. Both of them are very different to other because they didn't know where

culture they are belong

The problem that the main character experience, first is when the father of joy didn't talk

neither look to jack because it’s very hard for him to see the consequences or the result

of the problem that her daughter experienced and also when the mass media enter to

their problem they didn't go to the place they want to because mass media is always

there. Jack experienced a hard challenge because he didn't know how to communicate

to other people and didn't know where they are belong, and most worse is when joy

experienced depression he did not pay attention to his son.

Based on the movie "room" they used an assertive and aggressive style of

communication. Joy talks to Jack about the outside of the room, which is the real world.

After a while, Jack's voice increased because he did not want to believe in everything

his mother had said about the things outside of the room. And then, when they got out

of the room, they used an assertive style of communication. It was seen when Jack had

been adopt the real world and interact in other people. Just like when he talk with his

grandmother and his friend.

Jack and joy were different from other families because of their experience for

seven years in a room. The normal family has recognized mother, father, grandmother

and grandfather. But Jack is the only one who recognizes his mother and even he,

himself does not know him. And then the opportunity come, jack and joy came out of the

room and saw the real world. Jack had been with his grandmother and grandfather but

his grandfather did not accept him because of the fact that he was a child of Joy in the

unlikely event. Despite of their situation, Jack and joy remain brave and firm. So even if

every family has a problem or trial, just be firm.

Aside from the difficulty that they encounter, they face another challenge again.

One of this is Jack. He has no knowledge or idea what real world is. The only thing that

he really knows is what he sees inside the room. He didn't know what's outside that
room and even he, himself does not know whether he is a human or a plastic and still in

the trials. Jack and joy face on how they get Nick off to get them out of the room and

jack sees what's outside the room, which is the real world.
