INTRODUCTION

METAL FABRICATION SHOP

Metalworking is a craft that has allowed secondary processes to develop and was

crucial in helping different societies to develop wealth, essential technologies and useful
tools throughout history. Societies with advanced metalworkers have always had an edge
in terms of wealth and relations with other nations.

Metal Fabrication is the process of building machines and structures from raw metal
materials. The process includes cutting, burning, welding, machining, forming, and assembly
to create the final product. Metal fabrication projects include everything from hand railings
to heavy equipment and machinery. Specific subsectors include cutlery and hand tools;
architectural and structural metals; hardware manufacturing; spring and wire
manufacturing; screw, nut, and bolt manufacturing; and forging and stamping.

REQUIRED PERSONNEL:

 Ironworkers or Steel erectors

 Welders

 Blacksmith workers

 Milwright workers

 Boilmakers
 Machine workers esp. in Machining

EQUIPMENTS AND MATERIALS:

1. Forming
Forming, metal forming, is the metalworking process of fashioning metal parts and
objects through mechanical deformation; the work piece is reshaped without adding or
removing material, and its mass remains unchanged. Forming operates on the materials
science principle of plastic deformation, where the physical shape of a material is
permanently deformed.

2. Mig Welding
Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding was first patented in the USA in 1949 for welding
aluminum. The arc and weld pool formed using a bare wire electrode was protected by
helium gas, readily available at that time. From about 1952, the process became popular
in the UK for welding aluminum using argon as the shielding gas, and for carbon steels
using CO2. CO2 and argon-CO2 mixtures are known as metal active gas (MAG) processes.
MIG is an attractive alternative to MMA, offering high deposition rates and high
productivity.

3. Tig Welding
Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding became an overnight success in the 1940s for
joining magnesium and aluminium. Using an inert gas shield instead of a slag to protect
the weldpool, the process was a highly attractive replacement for gas and manual metal
arc welding. TIG has played a major role in the acceptance of aluminium for high quality
welding and structural applications.

is the production of metal structures using a range of processes such as cutting, bending
and assembling.
