A SAMPLING OF THEORIES OF GLOBALIZATION

• World-systems theory shares with several other
approaches to globalization a
critique of capitalism as an expansionary system
that has come to encompass the
entire world over the past 500 years.
• The world system is arranged according to
influence: core (most dominant), to semi-
periphery, to periphery (least dominant).
Immanuel Wallerstein ➢ The core consists of the strongest and most
(and its three-level powerful nations in which technologically
World-System Theory hierarchy: core, advanced, capital-intensive products are produced
periphery, and semi- and exported to the semi periphery and the
periphery) periphery.
➢ The semi periphery consists of industrialized Third
World nations that lack the power and economic
dominance of the core nations (Brazil is a semi
periphery nation).
➢ The periphery consists of nations whose economic
activities are less mechanized and are primarily
concerned with exporting raw materials and
agricultural goods to the core and semi periphery.
Theories Of Global • this group of theories differs from the world-
William I. Robinson
Capitalism system paradigm in several essential respects. In
particular, these theories tend to see globalization
as a novel stage in the evolving system of world
capitalism (hence these theorists tend to speak of
capitalist globalization), one with its own,
qualitatively new features that distinguish it from
earlier epochs.
• The supranational organizations are staffed by
transnational functionaries who find their
counterparts in transnational functionaries who
staff transformed national states. These
‘transnational state cadres’ act as midwives of
capitalist globalization.

THE NETWORK SOCIETY

• the conceptual essence of globalization is ‘time-
space distanciation’. Echoing a common
denominator in much, if not all, globalization
theories, Giddens defi nes time-space distanciation
as ‘the intensifi cation of worldwide social
relations which link distant localities in such a way
that local happenings are shaped by events
occurring many miles away and vice versa’ –
social relations are ‘lifted out’ from local contexts

• On the other side are low income groups providing
low-skilled services such as clerical, janitorial,
security and personal services. These low-income
groups are largely constituted by transnational
migrants drawn from Third World zones. In these
global cities we see a concentration of new
gendered and racialized transnational labor pools
increasingly facing the casualization and in
formalization of work.
• Transnationalism/ality has also been central to
theories of ethnic group formation and

2. Application to the Philippines: Of the various approaches and theories on globalization, which one do you think best
describes the pattern of Philippine development, its integration in the global system and its relationship to other
countries? (max of 150 words)

• Since the development of globalization in the Philippines, there have been many advantages that have occurred
because of it. These things are very beneficial because they help the economy grow every day.
• I think it is the Global Culture because The Philippines is a country that has varied cultural influences. Most of
these influences are results of previous colonization, deriving mainly from the culture of Spain and the United
States. Despite all of these influences, the old Asian culture of Filipinos has been retained and are clearly seen in
their way of life, beliefs and customs. Wherever you go, Filipino culture is very evident and has largely been
appreciated and even applauded in many parts of the world.
