4. What are the benefits of Reinforced Concrete Construction

ctivity 1A
1. What are low rise buildings defined as?
A low-rise is a building that is only a few stories tall or any building that is shorter than a
high-rise, though others include the classification of mid-rise.

 Deep strip or trench foundations are similar to strip foundations and are used in
low rise domestic construction such as building houses, house extensions.
 Deep strip or trench foundation is used when soil is not strong enough for a
generally strip foundation.

2. List and briefly explain the main structural principles that apply to
the erection or demolition of low-rise commercial structures.

different methods that are applied for the erection or demolition of low-rise commercial structures

Brick veneer and cladding over timber-framed and lightweight

section steel-framed construction.
Cavity brick construction.
Earth-wall construction.

Lightweight concrete construction, such as construction of

autoclaved aerated concrete AAC.

Activity 1B
1. Explain what section properties are and the effect it has on
structural performance.

All buildings and other structures should have regular inspections and maintenance
to maintain structural integrity Assessment of building structures can be classified as assessment
of material performance or assessment of structural performance. Assessment of
material performance, normally involves the evaluation of mechanical and durability properties
such as chloride penetration, corrosion of the materials etc.

Dead loads: Such as the fixtures and structural elements.
Live loads: Such as occupants, furniture, traffic.
Environmental loads: Such as wind, snow, earthquake, settlement.

2. Provide a definition for each of the following materials and their

related construction methods:

 Brick veneer and cladding over timber-framed and lightweight

section steel-framed construction
 Cavity brick construction
 Earth-wall construction
 Lightweight concrete construction
 Pole frame construction
 Portal frame construction
 Post and beam construction
 Post and truss construction
 Single-leaf (reinforced) masonry construction
 Tilt slab construction.

 Brick veneer and cladding over timber-framed and

lightweight section steel-framed construction

Brick cladding is a construction term that means brick to cover another type of
material, for some specific function or to make it look better. It also protects the
coated item from the elements. Here is a list of the advantages of brick cladding.
 Cavity brick construction

A cavity wall is composed of two masonry walls separated by an air space. The
outer wall is made of brick and faces the outside of the building structure. The
inner wall may be constructed of masonry units such as concrete block, structural

clay, brick or reinforced concrete.
 Earth-wall construction
Rammed earth walls are constructed by ramming a mixture of selected aggregates,
including gravel, sand, silt and a small amount of clay, into place between flat
panels called formwork. Most of the energy used in the construction of rammed
earth is in quarrying the raw material and transporting it to the site.
 Lightweight concrete construction

Lightweight concrete can be defined as a type of concrete which includes an

expanding agent in that it increases the volume of the mixture while giving
additional qualities such as nailbility and lessened the dead weight. The main
specialties of lightweight concrete are its low density and thermal conductivity.
 Pole frame construction
Post-frame construction refers to a highly engineered wood-framed building that
can be built with a variety of exteriors. Buildings can be built on concrete columns
in the ground, columns mounted on a monolithic slab or over a basement.
 Portal frame construction

Portal frames are generally low-rise structures, comprising columns and horizontal
or pitched rafters, connected by moment-resisting connections. This form of
continuous frame structure is stable in its plane and provides a clear span that is
unobstructed by bracing.

 Post and beam construction

Post and beam construction is a building method that relies on heavy timbers rather
than dimensional lumber The use of large timbers in post and beam
construction means fewer support beams are needed, thus creating dramatically
open interior spaces.
 Post and truss construction
A post is a main vertical or leaning support in a structure similar to a column or
pillar but the term post generally refers to a timber but may be metal or stone. A
stud in wooden or metal building construction is similar but lighter duty than
a post and a strut may be similar to a stud or act as a brace.

 Single-leaf (reinforced) masonry construction

A single leaf wall consists of just one layer of a building material. They are
different to the cavity wall construction common throughout the rest of the country,

which consist of two layers of masonry with a cavity in between
 Tilt slab construction.

Tilt-up concrete gets its name from the manner in which construction occurs: by
lifting or tilting panels with a crane to form the walls of buildings. Panels can be
produced in many shapes and sizes, including flat and curved
sections. Concrete placement is fast and easy because it is done on the ground.

2. Explain what building technologies are.

The term building technology refers to the technical processes and methods used in the
constructing buildings. In essence, construction is the process of moving and assembling
materials and equipment into completed forms for use.

Objective: to provide you with an opportunity to identify how technical
construction principles and performance characteristics of structural wall
systems and wall cladding systems are identified and analysed in the planning
of the building and construction project, and processes for erecting wall
systems and wall cladding systems are identified, implemented and checked for
compliance with manufacturer specifications and relevant Australian standards
and codes
1. Explain what structural wall systems and wall cladding systems are.

 wall cladding systems:

The rainscreen cladding system is made with a bearing wall, an
insulation layer and a cladding material that is fixed to the building
using a supporting structure. Thanks to this structure, an air cavity is
created between the load bearing wall and the cladding material,
allowing continuous ventilation.

 structural wall systems:

Set of shelves often with cabinets or bureaus that can be variously
arranged along a wall.

2. List four structural wall systems.

1. Load bearing wall.

2. Non-load bearing wall.
3. Cavity wall.
4. Shear wall.

3. List five wall cladding systems.

Vinyl Cladding.
Weatherboard Cladding.
Glass Cladding.
Brick Cladding.
Fibre Cement Cladding.

relevant standards and codes are identified and implemented to ensure
appropriate allowances have been made for relevant services to be installed

2. Explain what procedures should be followed when having plumbing

and electrical services installed in a building.

Installation Commercial plumbers install essential fittings and fixtures, like high-capacity
sinks and faucets, as well as toilets, each of which handles thousands of gallons of water
daily. Maintenance Large buildings frequently have additional convenience and safety
features.
