ASSOCIATE

Forest Carbon’s Sumatra Merang Peatland Project is now a proven business model for large-scale
restoration, with more than 5 million Euro in investment capital raised. Sales secured from major global
brands support restoration efforts on more than 22,000 hectares, which reduces the risk of fire,
strengthens the rural economy, and creates jobs, and delivers returns for investors and partners.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE


The Operations and Project Management Associate is designed to be a growth role at Forest Carbon,
offering an opportunity to support project management within the company’s technical unit and human
resources management within the operations unit of the company. At the end of a mutually agreed period,
the Associate will have the choice to focus full time on one of these areas and then hire on another
individual to fill the other area.
The Associate will also support the Sumatra Merang Peatland Project (SMPP) on various tasks as needed to
learn about the main environmental assets and source of revenue at the company. As the company scales
up to develop a pipeline of new projects, the role will grow along with the company to ensure robust
performance management systems cement Forest Carbon’s position as a leading forest restoration project
developer in Southeast Asia.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:
 The Associate will report to the Technical Unit Manager on all technical and project management tasks
 The Associate will report to the Director of Growth on all operations tasks, working closely with the
Director of Legal Affairs and Compliance, the Legal Adviser and the Finance Team.

GENERAL TASKS
Technical Unit:
 Support near-term project management on various tasks as needed as directed by the Technical Unit
Manager
 Evaluate current workflow and processes for the main products that are produced by the technical
team and draft a recommendations memo on how to improve workflow, employee utilization and
resource management:

o GIS rapid assessment
o Emissions Reduction (ER) calculations
o Financial Models
o Feasibility Studies
o Project Design Documents
o Other work products
 Define the vision for a dedicated project management role within the technical team with a clear
mandate, reporting lines and accountabilities according to project management best practices.
 Perform an audit of functional roles, responsibilities and reporting lines within the technical unit
o Develop updated org chart
o Updated RACI Matrix
o Updated Process Map
o TORs for all staff

Operations:
 Work closely with senior management and other functions to support corporate, project and
operations objectives as needed.
 Interview all staff at the company to refine and update their Terms of Reference/Job Descriptions
 Draft TORs for staff as needed, fulfilling an interim HR function
 Support the recruitment of an HR manager

Long Term Project Manager Position:


Once the company scales up and the demands on the technical team increase, the Associate will be rotated
into either a full-time project management role or a full-time operations role. The vision for the full-time
project management role is below:

Planning and Administration

 Plan, organize, staff, lead and monitor each project from concept to completion for each major
deliverable assigned the Forest Carbon technical unit.
Ensure all deliverables are produced within the constraints determined by the executive leadership
team, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budgeted costs, to expected quality
standards and within scope.
 Establish a clear and simple project management approach for the company based on existing
systems and recommended improvements.
 Work with the executive leadership to clarify roles, responsibilities, stakeholders and deadlines for
each project.
 Conduct a gap analysis where necessary comparing the resources currently available within the
company to what is needed to optimally deliver each project.
 Collaborate with the executive leadership team and Board of Directors in setting and driving
organizational vision, operational management and human capital strategy.
 Reinforce Forest Carbon’s collaborative culture where the overall success of the team is a function
of shared responsibility and ownership.

Communications

 Promote transparency, uniform understanding, and engagement across the company of the key
deliverables expected of the technical team.
 Ensure clear communication for each unique project on the roles, expectations, progress, and
changes to the project to ensure that objectives are met.
 Deploy the right project management tools to maximize information sharing and collaboration
across the company and improve on existing SOPs
 Lead all relevant meetings to discuss project delivery, including regular team meetings, kickoff
meetings for new projects, project status reports and performance summaries for the executive
leadership team.

Knowledge Management

 Develop a knowledge management system for the company and a process for recording critical
institutional information
 Analyze the people and processes that deliver the company’s technical projects and document
lessons learned
 Assemble and keep up-to-date core project management tools, including organizational resources,
templates, best practices, reference libraries and other technical information
 Ensure all project documents are organized efficiently and according to company SOPs
 Perform de-brief sessions after the completion of each major deliverable to document lessons
learned and improve project management practice at the company.
 Participate in the company technology steering group to assess where key investments in new
technology can add efficiencies to the technical unit

Performance Management

 Contribute to a performance-aligned culture at the company by monitoring and reporting on


progress towards targets.
 Develop KPIs for each project to provide a succinct and complete picture of the status of each
project.
 Proactively identify, assess and manage all areas of risk
 Work with executive leadership to set development goals and a performance plan for individual
staff on the technical team.

 Negotiation & Conflict management

The Associate should possess the following qualifications:

 4-7 years relevant professional experience in project management, professional services or business
administration.
 Proven experience working on the ground with field operations in Indonesia
 Detailed knowledge project management practices
 Advanced certification or degree in project management, such as PMD PRO or PRINCE2 Methodologies
 Undergraduate degree in business administration, management or similar sector
 Indonesian citizenship is required as is fluent spoken and written English
 Experience working with remote teams is required
 Previous experience with conservation, restoration or commercial agriculture would be considered a
distinct plus
 Prior experience in smaller and/or start-up companies preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

 Master’s Degree in a related field from an International Accredited University.


 Bachelor’s Degree from an International Accredited University combined with 6-10 years or more of
directly relevant experience can be considered.
 Knowledge of carbon and environmental restoration projects preferred.
 Fluent written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia and English with strong writing and reporting skills.
