TEST EVALUATION INSTRUCTION:

a. What Is an Engineering Manager?
An engineering manager is a professional with both engineering and management experience.
As a result, they are in a unique position to organize and oversee complex technological projects.
b. What Is the Role of Engineering Managers?
The role of the engineering manager is to ensure that key projects and engineering duties are
fulfilled. They are in charge of resolving any engineering problems that may arise during a
project. They must also prepare reports on the project's progress. They are also responsible for
the overall technical integrity of the project. In other words, everything that has something to do
with the project is the responsibility of the engineering manager.
c. What do you believe you’ll achieve as an engineering manager that you couldn’t
achieve as an engineer?
I believe that I will achieve as an engineering manager would be having good team coordination
and communication. It is simply because I think that if you do not have enough status in the field,
your actions or how you deal with problems arising are somewhat restricted which you need to
ask permission for such action to be implemented.
d. What are the specifics of managing small teams versus large engineering teams?
There is a big difference in managing small and large teams. Managing a small team is easier
than a large team since there is a lot of communication that can be done between the team
members, and the focus of the team is only on one project at a time. While managing a large
team, communication is one, so does the participation of each of the members might be a
problem that is the time when a team is starting to malfunction and the development would halt.
e. How would you describe the difference between leadership and management?
I think a good manager should both lead and manage. He should focus on improving the team
as much as he can and providing support to it. With this, the clients and the company are satisfied
with the results. on the other hand, leadership means that you have to take everything up into
your hand and understand the people you work with. And make sure to let your members feel
that they are satisfied with their jobs and advancing with the projects take on.
f. How would you describe the role of an engineering manager?
An excellent engineering manager, in my opinion, must be flexible from time to time, from
product design and development to communication. Engineering managers should focus on
three things: optimizing workflow, keeping up with improvements, and assisting our employees
in their growth. Our primary objective should be to reduce waste and increase efficiency. It's also
critical for the company to be innovative so it can maintain a competitive advantage over its
competitors. Lastly, we have to help our employees grow if we want to retain them.
g. How would you approach coaching?
I would determine the team's main strengths and weaknesses and help them improve
accordingly. If necessary, I would hold one-on-one coaching sessions with team members. To
learn more about their objectives and plans for their careers. to come up with necessary actions
to help them in their growth.
h. How do you manage engineers with performance issues?
I manage those who perform well in the same way that I help them improve. There is almost
always a reason for poor performance behaviors. With that in mind, I make every effort to
comprehend the engineer and the underlying causes. Then I assist them in refocusing on their
career and role on the team.
i. What do you look for when hiring new engineers?
I always focus on looking for people with talent and the capacity to learn from experience to
improve themself. And since engineering is a demanding field that requires more heads than
one to approach a task. An ideal hire is someone flexible when it comes to working with other
experts.
j. How do technology lead and engineering managers work together?
In smaller companies, the engineering manager should be the technology leads. In large
companies, however, tech leads are in charge of each team's progress and outcomes. Tech
leads can assist engineering managers in better understanding people and project management.
And provide a unique direct experience point of view on how to improve the future system.
k. How do you resolve conflicts within teams?
If possible, I serve as a mediator between team members who are on bad terms. And focus on
giving everyone a chance to speak on their behalf and helping them reach an equitable
conclusion while keeping the company’s best interests in mind. If that’s not possible, I talk to
them one-on-one. To see what the root cause is and then walk the team through resolving it.
l. What management functions refers to the process of anticipating problems, analyzing
them, estimating their likely impact and determining actions that will lead to the desired
outcomes and goals? Cite example situation.
This management function refers to planning. An example situation of planning, A part of the
construction has been overdue the deadline. For that reason, as an engineering manager, you
will act as fast as possible to come up with solutions. Picked the processes that you find the
most appropriate and to organize them into a logical pattern. You must also identify the timeline
for these processes. As a result, decreasing a person of a project that is almost done and
transferring them to the delayed project would be the ideal solution.
m. If you are an engineer wanting to become a manager, what are the most important
things that you should focus with?
I should focus on knowing how to communicate objectives and tasks to my team members. and
know their teams’ strengths and weaknesses, and set appropriate expectations that are realistic
but challenging. Furthermore, I should have time management, am good at multitasking, and
staying calm under pressure since there are chances that managers will be given multiple
projects at once.
n. What management function involves selecting candidates and training personnel?
Explain the process.
The management involves in selecting and recruiting personnel is staffing. If we talk about
staffing, it is the process of choosing exact people to work for the position so that the organization
wouldn't be hindered by a lack of personnel in a field. The process of choosing the right
personnel consist of Manpower planning, Recruitment, training and development,
Remuneration, performance appraisal, and promotions.
o. Actual performance normally is the same as the original plan and therefore it is
necessary to check for deviation and to take corrective action. This action refers to
what management function? Support your answer.
This management function refers to Controlling. Controlling’s most important function is the risk-
reduction ability. Since you are essentially monitoring the performance of the team and
comparing it against the objectives you’ve set, you can react to problems more easily. Instead
of realizing at the end of the month that you’ve missed your sales target by a huge margin, you
can keep an eye on the situation during the process.
p. Why leadership is the most essential attribute of a project manager?
Successful project management requires strong leadership on behalf of the manager overseeing
the project. As a project manager, you must be able to effectively lead your team from start to
finish to ensure the efficient completion of a project. You should be able to motivate your team
to perform at their best throughout the project and ensure that they all have a clear understanding
of what is being expected out of them. Also, you should be able to assess your team’s strengths
and weaknesses and decide how to best utilize them throughout the project completion process.
