CHAPTER I
This chapter includes the introduction, background of the study, statement of the
problem, objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope and delimitation, and the
conceptual or theoretical framework.
Introduction
In today’s generation, gadgets are consistently used due to the continuous growing of
technology that may affect a student’s performance to their education if overused and lose self-
control especially in online learning. Studies have shown that too much gadgets may negatively
affect a child's brain on its functioning, and may even cause attention deficit, cognitive delays,
impaired learning, increased impulsivity, and decreased ability to self-regulation that may
become a hindrance and have difficulties to attain knowledge.
Focusing can be difficult if students will have access to gadgets every time because it can
lead to the feeling of needing to be updated always. Acquiring gadgets can lessen the time of the
children or teens studying, it can cause them a lot of disadvantages such as not being able to
listen well and pay attention to what is being taught to them. Students who spend several hours
each day staying up late to use their mobile phones tend to change and affect their sleeping
habits. Numerous studies have shown and proved that gadgets are causing several health issues
to students, including grade 10. Due to the increased use of gadgets, the students suffer from
health problems like vision difficulties, chronic neck, back pain, bad posture, and others.
The researchers decided to conduct this study, because gadgets are one of the main
factors contributing to children’s excellent learning, especially this online learning in these times
of pandemic. Disturbance to student’s focus and improper regulation using gadgets play a vital
role in a child’s education the reason we should conduct such effect. The overuse of devices for
children who are addicted to technology such as tablets, laptops, computers, and cellphones may
reduce student's self-motivation, ability, and interest in learning. It's unsafe for a student who
uses gadgets more than limits. This study desires to fathom the effects of gadget on a controlled
regulation on Grade 10 TRACE College academic performances.
Due to the pandemic, students uses their gadgets for a long span of time. They even use it
for classes, during classes, and even after classes. The lives of school children and their parents
have been seriously affected. Schools are closed and children are spending more time at home
and learning online. Their screen time has increased dramatically. Parents are stressed out
because they need to make sure their children are learning well. The issue of gadget addiction
has been a growing problem, now compounded by the effects of the global pandemic. People
uses internet to distract and entertain their selves. Due to its negative effects for children who are
five to 17 years of age, the suggested screen time is two hours or less. For toddlers and
preschoolers over two years old, it’s just one hour. For children younger than that, screen time is
not being recommended. Therefore, children which are students are more exposed to gadgets and
technology and, naturally, to the risks related to the increased exposure.
Studies have shown that students find it difficult not to use their cellphones that leads to
poor academic performance. At 2018, the DepEd office in the Cordillera Administrative Region
took an active stance on the issue when it issued a memorandum banning cellphones and
wearable technology. It also urged teachers and parents to find ways to educate students on the
“responsible use of cellphones.” In connection, gadgets causes conflict to children’s academic
performance that schools needed to avoid students from using it. Regional Director May Eclar
said text messaging, gaming, watching videos and chatting through social media applications
were distracting students and could sometimes stir disturbance in class. Students use gadgets for
a long period of time due to the lockdown, and can freely use it anytime which means they could
be more distracted nowadays. She added that, the use of cellphones within the school premises
has various negative to the students. Using cellular phones during classes or after classes does
not only affect the academic performance of the students, but also their behavior.
Students’ screen time and usage of gadget continues to increase day by day. In the
research done by Ramane D and Kottapalle S, children who ages 8 to 19 now spend an average
of 10 hours and 45 minutes a day on the internet. In addition, according to a research done by
Laurisa et al, they found out that 8 to 18 years old log an average of 7½ hours a day with media,
including television, computers, cell phones and music players. This result of the research should
be worried as youth easily exposed to the gadget use as early as 8 years old. We worried that
this problem will increase continuously and bring a negative response to the quality the
student’s academic performance. Majority of students who spent more time on electronic gadget
use has high level of dependency towards gadget, poor academic performance and good health
status. Thus, students should plan effective intervention such as controlled regulation electronic
gadget for academic purposes and health tracking to overcome these problems so that students
can balance between their academic achievement and health status and increase wellness and
health among students.
The researchers believe that even with the use of gadgets there will be both good and bad
effects to the student’s academic performance. Given all the information above, the researchers
claim that we must have a controlled time when using gadgets. The data that will be provided
will prove that using gadgets have either bad or good effects on a student’s academic
performance and the researchers believe that with a certain period of time in using gadgets, there
are bad or good effects in a student’s academic performance in a prolonged period of time.

research instruments and techniques, and the data gathering procedure.
Research Design
This study will discover the effects of gadgets on a student’s academic performance with
the use of descriptive type of research. Descriptive research aims to accurately and
systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon S. McCombes(2020).This is also
a quantitative method where survey will be utilized to discover the effects of gadgets on a
student’s academic performance.
This study shall employ the use of Convenience sampling, it is the easiest method of
sampling, because participants are selected based on availability and willingness to take part.
Useful result can be obtained, but the results are prone to significant bias, but those who
volunteer to take part may be different from those who choose not to (volunteer bias), and the
sample may not be representative of other characteristics, such as age or sex. Since the study is
intended to ascertain the implication of Effects of gadget on a controlled regulation, the
researcher chose to do the research to the available participants of grade 10 students since the
situation nowadays is quarantine.
