INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of gadgets on students’ academic
performance. Gadgets have played an essential role in the student’s education as
they widely enhance their learning process where there are variously detailed sites
students can go to whenever they are stuck on a topic. However, many state that
students use gadgets as a diversion from their academics. As a result, we are going
to identify which students prioritize gadgets over academics and vice versa.

In social life, many individuals, especially students, are distracted by screen time
entertainment rather than focusing on academics. Some students claim that the use
of gadgets after class helps them to relax and avoid stress and pressure.
“Philippines has the most screen time usage” according to (Hootsuite and We are
Social, 2021) Students in the Philippines find themselves comforted by browsing
through social media applications or watching videos online. The popularity of these
platforms has spread all over the country, and most of the users are students. Other
learners are also influenced by their friends or schoolmates by being interested and
fascinated by its functions.

Regardless of the popularity and importance of gadgets, it also has negative effects
on students who don’t manage their screen time and schedule properly. Additionally,
it may lead to addiction that may worsen their learning ability, concentration,
interactions with people and academic performance, it can also affect students’
mental health and develop bad habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms. According
to (Golden Peak High School, 2020), “students who spend a lot of time on gadgets
may become more violent, lose interest in other things in the environment
surrounding them, be lazy, have less interest in other hobbies, and lack motivation in
academics”. These problems lead children to develop bad personalities.
Furthermore, the overuse of gadgets makes the students far from real-time human
connection. Students who were found spending more time on gadgets find
themselves losing touch with other real social relationships.

Therefore, Students must value and consider that gadget addiction and engaging in
playing online games tend to harm their physical and social health that affect one’s
learning ability and capabilities. Thus, they must understand and learn to deepen
and widen their knowledge and skills through academic performance and lifestyle.

This study aims to contribute to the body knowledge regarding students’ time spent
on gadgets for entertainment in contrast to their investment in studies during their
spare time. This can potentially build an improved learning environment through
educating students about balancing their time management. As a result, it may lead
to better development of the learners’ overall academic performance.
Review of Related Literature:
(In the present era, modern technological gadgets have captured the attention of the
global population). The usage of gadgets has advanced humankind in various ways
such as communication, gathering information, and many more. Students who are
more inclined to technology can become too dependent. According to (Jyoti Ranjar
Muduli, 2014) “Youth is the most vulnerable group among the population to be
addicted to technology”. In this case, young people are the ones who are more
engaged in gadget usage for entertainment in place of meaningful use.

Children who are spending more time on technology can reduce their learning ability
and other recreational activities. This leads to unhealthy habits which can be
dangerous especially for their age. It may also cause lack of self-control and people
get easily influenced because of its easy and quick access.

This issue entails the lack of motivation of students’ learning and skills due to their
addiction to gadgets, which may lead to difficulties in the future. Hence, they decide
to stay on their gadgets longer than the hours they spend on studying due to lack of
time management that may be caused by boredom, causing them to lose interest in
trying the things that they are capable of.

Students who use digital technology too much are less inclined to participate in their
studies. Additionally, research has shown that internet addiction is more likely to be
related to loneliness and make it more difficult for students to organize their learning
effectively. Thus, this corresponding issue allows them to have leisure. This usually
occurs at discretionary times when individuals have the freedom to choose activities
that satisfy them due to boredom and a lack of motivation (Lobo, 2006; Tsaur et al.,
2012). It is also connected to pleasurable and enjoyable experiences that thrill
people out of their daily routines. Because they are curious and bored, students are
drawn to the environment and want to try new things that will keep them entertained.

In this rapidly advancing society, technology has transformed every aspect of our
lives, including communication, entertainment, education, etc. Hence, we cannot
avoid using technology, as it has become an integral part of our lives. Students are
no exception, as they need to use technology to increase their productivity and
efficiency, mainly when gathering information. But if they become too reliant, they
may neglect their ability to develop soft skills (such as adaptability, critical thinking
skills, etc.) or skip the fundamentals. Depending on how they interpret technology, it
can lead to positive or negative results. According to Kalpathy Ramaiyer
Subramanian, (2018). “Myth and mystery of attention span” “One of the deepest
concerns expressed by many scientists and researchers is the attention span that is
shrinking.”
Students have been struggling with their screen time for a long time. The majority of
researchers have discovered that students are using gadgets as a stress reliever to
help them prevent stress and pressure, but it actually has multiple negative effects. It
makes them jubilant to watch entertaining videos, but while they’re enjoying it,
they’re neglecting their academic activities. They are increasing the amount of
workload and creating more negative physiological impacts on themselves. Stress
brings children to unpredictable actions, and most of the students are spending their
time uploading their emotions on social media or allowing themselves to be
influenced by the people who use gadgets as well. Children’s emotional
development can be affected by gadgets or internet addiction.

Furthermore, this research talks about the problems that students may encounter
during their gadget usage. According to (Golden peak High school, 2020) “negative
effects come from the excessive use or misuse of gadgets or technology that may
lead to losing their social skills, lack of motivation and interest in other things.” It can
be observed that some students use gadgets for entertainment purposes rather than
academic purposes, due to the uncontrolled use of gadgets it may cause the
exploration of their minds to be limited. Additionally, gadgets can affect the students’
health, but living without gadgets is a nightmare. Students need discipline in how and
when they use them.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This mini-research will help the researchers to determine the Total Hours of Gadget
use and Study Time of Grade 8 Romans Students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study will be tackled to find out the Total Hours of Gadget use and Study Time
of Grade 8 Students.

THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS
