II – Reading Comprehension

MARCELINO SAMBÉ
Marcelino Sambé is a 24-year-old Portuguese ballet dancer. He was born on
29th April, the International Dance Day. His background as a ballet dancer is
not typical, though. He grew up in Alto da Loba, near Lisbon, training in
athletics and also in African dance at a local community centre with a group
called Estrelitas Africanas. At eight years old, he decided to audition for
Lisbon’s National Conservatory Dance School. “I didn’t know anything about
ballet and didn’t have a proper kit, so I had to dance in my socks. They asked

me to improvise and I started doing my African choreography.”

He got in and he enjoyed school. “The directors and teachers believed in me and pushed me hard — it was
pretty intense. I learned a lot about discipline and they treated contemporary dance and ballet as equals,
which meant I could be both types of dancer. Also, I was quite lucky to have a friend, Telmo Monteiro, who
was already there and who was one of the best students in the school.”

Soon after Marcelino had started his classes, his father died. Dancing helped him deal with his personal
tragedy. Later, his mother decided to move to Alentejo with his sister, but he had to stay in Lisbon, to
attend his dance classes. A “new family” would be ready to welcome him. Maria Barroso was a student at
Lisbon’s National Conservatory Dance School, too, and her parents decided to invite Marcelino to stay at
their home.

As he got older, Sambé started taking part in international competitions,

winning several prizes. His hard work paid off and he was offered a contract with
the Royal Ballet. He is now the Royal Ballet first soloist and he has managed to
impress several critics with his great performances. “I’m living the most exciting
time of my life at the moment,” he says. He is joyful and positive. “I get a lot of
energy when everyone around me is in a good state. I feel at my best when my
friends and family are happy; it puts me in the same spirit.”
