sketches of Filipino heroes

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday unveiled a mural exhibit which featured
portraits and biosketches of Filipino heroes.

With the theme “Bayani, sa Lupain ng Ginto’t Bulaklak,” the exhibit will run from June 24 to July 5
at the lobby of Rizal Building at the DepEd Central Office in Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. The
initiative is being undertaken in celebration of the 121st Anniversary of Philippine
Independence and Founding of the DepEd and the 158th Birth of Jose Rizal.
The mural exhibit was made possible through DepEd’s Office of the Undersecretary for
Administration (OUA) and the Youth Formation Division (YFD). DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones,
Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua and mural artist Angelo Aurelio led the unveiling of the mural
exhibit. Students from various schools as well as officials of OUA, Bureau of Learner Support
Services (BLSS) and YFD were also present during the event.

Aurelio’s mural featured the faces of some Filipino heroes including Rizal, Andres Bonifacio,
Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Sultan Dipatuan Kudarat, Juan Luna,
Melchora Aquino, and Gabriela Silang.

The featured heroes as all recognized as “National Heroes” by President Rodrigo Duterte as
cited in memorandum circular number 25 signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

Signed on September 15, 2017, the circular directed all government offices to “display or exhibit
photographs, paintings, or other forms of representations” of Philippine heroes. It also stated
that: “his material has expanded the list to 21 to enable public offices and our public schools to
present these National Heroes in public so they may serve as role models of the Filipino Youth
and Students.”

Last Friday, June 21, the DepEd celebrated its 121st Foundation Day and enjoined schools,
offices and its personnel to take part in activities related to it.

With theme, “DepEd Para sa Pilipino,” Briones said that the celebration is pursuant to
Administrative Order No. 322 s. of 1997 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos that
recognizes June 23, 1898 as the Foundation Day of the Department.

In order to “promote the public awareness” of the event, the DepEd Central Office enjoined all
personnel, offices, and officials at the regional, schools division offices and schools to “produce
information and communication materials” by hanging of DepEd 121st Foundation Day official
streamer in all offices and schools and wearing of blue shirts/polo/blouses on June 21, 2019 “in
support of the celebration.”

The agency also urged its personnel to “participate in DepEd’s online celebration” by changing
their Facebook cover using DepEd 121st Foundation Day tarpaulin or streamer design and by
“sharing of stories highlighting the most unforgettable DepEd experiences” using the hashtags,
#DepEd121 and #DepEdParaSaPilipino in social media accounts.

Schools and other DepEd offices have also been enjoined to “organize activities based on the
theme” by partnering with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural
Center of the Philippines (CCP) for the return of the opera show entitled “Noli Me Tangere, The
Opera Touch Me Not” at the CCP which were attended by selected teachers and learners on
June 21, 2019 and DepEd officials of staff last June 22, 2019.

Briones noted that these activities were in support of the current administration’s agenda for
“cultural awareness and appreciation” and will also promote patriotism and nationalism among
learners and teachers alike.
