WEEK DAY

OBJECTIVES Define endogenic processes.

Differentiate the types of endogenic processes.
Describe how rocks behave under different types of stress such as
compression, pulling apart and shearing.
CONCEPTS ✓ Endogenic Processes are geological processes that occur beneath the
surface of the Earth. It is associated with energy originating in the interior
of the solid earth.
✓ Endogenic Forces the forces within the earth that cause the ground to
move.

Types of Endogenic Processes

✓ Folding bending of rocks because of stress.

✓ Stress defined as the force that could create deformation on rocks in their
shape and volume.
Types of Stress
• Tensional Stress rock is stretched part or pulled apart.
• Compressional Stress rock is squeezed, pressed or pushed together.
• Shear Stress rock is being pulled in opposite direction.

✓ Faulting process of forming faults.

✓ Faults extremely long and deep break or large crack

Types of Faults
✓ Normal fault occur where two blocks of rock
are pulled apart, as by tension.

✓ Reverse fault occur when brittle rocks are

pushed (the tectonic forces are
compressional).

✓ Strike Slip Fault occur when brittle rocks are

sheared and the movement of blocks is chiefly
horizontal direction.

Other Endogenic Process

✓ Volcanism or Magmatism is the eruption of magma onto the surface of

the Earth.
Magma is a hot molten rock, a mixture of liquid rock minerals, and
dissolved gases.

✓ Metamorphism alteration of the composition or structure of a rock by

heat, pressure and other natural agency.

✓ Earthquake a sudden shaking or vibration in the earth’s crust.

QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY Activity 1: Faults and Folds

Using the recycle materials make an illustration of the different faults and
folds.

ASSESSMENT/ Directions: Identify what is being described in each statement.

APPLICATION
MAGMA. 1. It is a mixture of liquid rock minerals, and dissolved gases.
FAULTS. 2. It occurs when brittle rocks are pushed.
EARTHQUAKE. 3. It is a sudden shaking or vibration in the earth’s crust.
STRESS. 4. It is defined as the force that could create deformation on
rocks in their shape and volume.
PLATE MOTIOM 5. It is the forces within the earth that cause the ground to
move.
