EXOGENOUS PROCESSES

ON
OBJECTIVES
• Explain how the products of weathering are
carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere.
• Describe the physical and chemical changes in
rocks due to changes in pressure and temperature
(metamorphism).
EXOGENOUS PROCESSES
are processes that take place at or near the Earth’s
surface that makes the surface wear away. These are
very destructive, they are responsible for
degradation, and sculpting the Earth’s surface.
EXOGENOUS EXAMPLES
1. Weathering
2. Erosion
3. Mass Wasting
4. Sedimentation
1.
WEATHERING
•it is the disintegration of rocks,
soils, and mineral together with
other materials through contact with
Earth’s subsystem.
WEATHERING
KINDS OF WEATHERING
A. Physical Weathering – is the breakdown of rocks by mechanical
forces concentrated along rock fractures. This can occur whether in
temperature, pressure and frost. Example: Soils crack because of
extreme heat or drought.
KINDS OF WEATHERING
B. Chemical Weathering – is the process by which rocks break down
by chemical reactions. Example: Carbonation of limestone the
ground to loosen up and the ground fragile and eventually collapse.
2. EROSION
is the process by which Earth’s surface is worn away by
wind, water, or ice.
3. MASS WASTING
it is the movement of material on the downslope terrain
due to gravity. It usually happens in slopes and may
occur in areas that can trigger mass movement.
KINDS OF MASS WASTING
A. Debris Flow – happens when large amount of sediments usually
rocks of various sizes flow downslopes.
KINDS OF MASS WASTING
B. Mud Flow – happens when combined soil and water flow
downslope.
KINDS OF MASS WASTING
C. Slumps – this is downslope movement of loosely consolidated
materials or rock and soil layers.
4. SEDIMENTATION
is the accumulation of materials such as soil, rock fragments and soil
settling at the bottom of stream, lake or sea.
ENDOGENOUS PROCESSE

on
ENDOGENOUS
PROCESSES
are caused by forces from within or in the
interior of the Earth. The driving force is
the thermal energy of the mantle and the
crust.
ENDOGENOUS
of Earth isPROCESSES
responsible for Earthquakes,
movement of plates leading to development
of continents, mountain building and
volcanic activities.
EXAMPLES
OF
ENDOGENOUS PROCESSE
1. MAGMATISM
Magma is very hot and is constantly moved
by the internal heat that reaches the mantle
of Earth. Magma forms when rocks reaches
between 800 and 1,200 degree Celsius.
MAGMATISM
happens when magma is generated and
develops into igneous or magmatic
rocks.
2. VOLCANISM
also called as Plutonism is the process
that usually happens after the magma is
formed.
VOLCANISM PROCESS
a) Magma tries to escape from sources
such as volcanoes or cracks.
b) Magma comes out with extreme
heat and pressure and may cause
destructive explosions.
c) Magma that reaches the surface of
the Earth is called the lava.
THE VOLCANO
3. METAMORPHISM

is the process of changing the materials

that make up a rock.
METAMORPHISM
CAUSES
The chemical components and
geological characteristics of the rock
change due to heat, fluids and pressure
that is increasing or decreasing.
TYPES OF
METAMORPHISM
REGIONAL
METAMORPHISM
happens in a larger or more extensive
area like mountain range.
CONTACT
METAMORPHISM
happens if rock minerals and texture
change because of heat.
TYPES OF STRESS INFLUENCING ROCK
BEHAVIOR
TENSIONAL STRESS
happens when rocks are pulled apart and may separate in
opposite direction. It is speculated that this type of stress is
the cause of breaking away the super continent known as
Pangea.
COMPRESSIONAL STRESS
type of stress when rocks are push or squeeze against each
other. Compressional stress is usually what takes place in
folding which results in mountain.
SHEARING STRESS
happens when some portions of a plate at the edges may
break away in different directions.
CLOSING ACTIVITY
• Supposed you have inherited a big area of land in your locality, and you want to develop this into
a sustainable farm. SUSTAINABLE FARM POSTER: Learners will create an advocacy poster
that upholds conserving land resources. Learners shall submit their outputs on Eliza.
