ACTIVITY: ACAD OVAL MAPPING

GOAL:
To produce a thematic map of the UP Academic Oval, using the following
key points:
1. Lamp Posts
2. Street Signs & traffic lights
3. Jeepney Stops, Waiting Sheds, Ped Xing, Humps, and Benches

STUDY AREA:
UP Academic Oval: the inner and outer lane of the acad oval, as well as A.
Rocess Avenue

WHAT YOU NEED:

1. Pace Factor
2. Pen & Paper
3. Umbrella/Cap/Food (Optional)

DETERMINING YOUR PACE FACTOR:

1. Measure 15m on the ground. Make sure to mark the end points.
2. Walk (using your normal pace) at least 5 times, counting the number of steps you have
undertaken to cover the designated distance.
3. Get the average number of steps, divided by 15m.

OUTPUT:
1. Map – the thematic map should be functional, should contain the necessary elements covered
during class discussion.
2. Map Analysis – Provide a summary of your findings, as well as the importance of the map you
have created. Discussion is not limited to what is existing, but may also contain
recommendations.

IMPORTANT:
1. BE SAFE!!!! Deductions will be given to anyone who will encounter any form of accident during
the activity.
2. This is the only session allotted to do the actual mapping. If you are able to finish early, you are
free to go to your next class. Otherwise, decide within your group when you will conclude the
activity.
3. Be extra careful, but try to measure the length/width of the road. Try also to determine the size
of the jeepney stops and waiting sheds.
