TOPIC 5: STADIA

TACHEOMETRIC
Subtopic:
• Introduction of Stadia Tacheometric
• Optical principle & basic equations
• Usage in collecting detail information
& inclined stadia
LEARNING OUTCOME
At the end of this topic, student should be able
to:
• State the definition of stadia tacheometric and
the uses in survey works; straight and inclined
• Describe the optical principle, equations and
what information to collect in survey works
• Apply the appropriate analysis in determining
reduced level in inclined stadia
COURSE OUTCOME
CO1: Describe survey methods and suitable
equipments used for engineering survey.
CO2: Justify the effective communication
on survey engineering activities.
CO3: Organize survey equipment for field
work in civil engineering project.
PROGRAME OUTCOMES
PO1: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science,
engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization
to wide practical procedures and practices.
PO5: Apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern
engineering and IT tools to well-defined engineering
problems, with an awareness of the limitations.
PO10: Communicate effectively on well-defined engineering
activities with the engineering community and with society
at large, by being able to comprehend the work of others,
document their own work, and give and receive clear
instructions.
introduction
What is stadia tacheometry?
It is from Greek words

Stadia: (“measurement of length”)

measuring the distance of between objects.

Tacheometry ("quick measure")

System of rapid, fast and instant surveying
Positions of points on the earth surface are
determined without using a chain or tape,
Usually using tachometer or theodolite.
In modern survey, Theodolite is used as
tachometer. Despite can be used to measure
heights and angles. It can also used to measure
distance.
Tacheometry surveying method is usually :
i. of a lower order of accuracy for less accurate
survey.
ii. the results are very adequate where taping is
difficult.
It is useful for rough terrain where taping is not
suitable/available.
PURPOSE OF
TACHEOMETRY
1. Preparation of topographic map (require both
elevation and horizontal distance).
2. Survey work in difficult terrain. E.g. slope area
such in Academic Heights.
3. To perform detail filling of every random points.
4. Checking of already measured distance randomly.
5. Hydrographic survey of water bodies where
normal taping is impossible. Depth of river or
lake.
6. To produce large scale contoured
Method of measurement

There are 3 methods of tacheometric

measurement:
i. Stadia method
ii. Subtance Bar Method
iii. Tangential Method
E.g. 1
