UPM-CALC/SEM 2/2015-16/CEL2102/PROJECT 3 – DESCRIPTION

Paralinguistic and Non-Verbal Features: What Else Are We Communicating? (20%)


This is a group project which requires you to analyse the paralinguistic and non-verbal features
found in a video. At the end of the project, your group is required to present your findings in
class. This project is to be presented in Week 14.

Part 1 (Preparation)
1. Form a group of 4-5 members.
2. Select a short video clip from television shows or movies. The clip must be around 5 – 6
minutes. Your video must be in English.
The video must NOT be on how to teach paralinguistic or non-verbal features.
3. Each member selects one paralinguistic or non-verbal feature from the following list
found in the video:
a) Stress patterns & Rhythm e) Fillers
b) Intonation f) Eye Contact
c) Hesitation g) Body Gestures
d) Pauses h) Posture
4. Each member then identifies three examples of the selected paralinguistic or non-verbal
feature found in the video and analyse its intention and effect on the character(s) in the
video.
5. Complete the attached worksheet (UPM-CALC/SEM 2/2015-16/CEL2102/PROJECT3 –
WORKSHEET).
6. As a group, submit the hardcopy of the worksheet to your instructor in Week 14 before
the presentation.

Part 2 (Presentation)
1. As a group, play the whole video clip.
2. Take turns to present your analysis by playing the snippets (the specific time frames /
time references) from the video clip which contain the paralinguistic or non-verbal feature
that you have chosen.
3. Each member must speak for 2-3 minutes.
4. Your group must complete the task within 15–20 minutes.

Assessment
Marks will be awarded individually based on the task analysis, language and fluency.
