Note: On maximum size cables the clamping ring may only pass over the armour

2. Ensure that the inner seal is relaxed by slacking the Main item (2). Secure sub-assembly ‘A’ into
the equipment either by screwing the entry item (1) into the threaded hole or by securing it in a
clearance hole using a locknut as possible.

3. Locate the armour cone (3) into its recess in main item (2). Pass the cable through sub-assembly

While continuing to push the cable forward to maintain contact between the armour and the cone,
tighten the main item (2) by hand until heave resistance is left (this is when the inner seal makes
contact with the cable inner sheath). Tighten a further full turn using a spanner.

4. Hold the main item (2) with a spanner and tighten sub-assembly ‘B’ onto sub-assembly ‘A’ using
a spanner until all available threads are used.

5. Tighten the outer seal nut (6) until it comes to an effective stop. This will occur when;

 The outer seal (6) has clearly engaged the cable and cannot be further tightened
without the use of excessive force by the installer

6. CMP Slip-On earth (ground) tags, installed between the cable gland and equipment, provide
on earth (ground) bond connection as specified in BS 6121, part 5. Installation of earth tags is
valid only for electrical cables, as, for instrument cables, the cable gland is in contact with the
metal body of the equipment which is already grounded.

7. For cable (SWA) entries directed into flameproof / explosion proof type ‘d’ enclosures for
indoor and outdoor for classified areas, ‘WR- Protex’ cable gland shall be used which provides an
environmental seal on the cable outer sheath and an explosion proof compound barrier seal to
the cable inner cores. This gland also provides mechanical cable retention and electrically
continuity via armour wire termination.

8. Sealing of cable glands with the use of displacement type seals which afford a large
degree of control in the tightening of the seals onto the cable sheaths as opposed to
conventional compression seals which usually requires the cable gland to be tightened on
installation.

9.The sealing configuration of SWA cable with ‘E1W’ type cable gland is inner and outer seal for
indoor and outdoor application.

10. The sealing configuration for SWA cable with ‘WR-Protex’ type cable gland is inner compound
barrier and outer sheaths for indoor, outdoor and classified areas application.

11. The seal material or compound used for ‘E1W’ gland is ‘Thermoplastic Elastomer’.

12. The seal material or compound used for ‘WR-Protex’ gland is ‘LSF Thermoplastic
Elastomer/Epoxy putty’.

13.The sealing technique for both ‘E1W & WR-Protex’ type cable gland is displacement type seal.

 This type of seal is usually employed in a cable gland that utilizes in a 3 stage ‘Step by Step’
sequential make off, where the tightening of the armour termination is separated from the
activation of the inner seal. This enables the effectiveness of the seal on the cable inner
bedding to be tested before the armour is terminated. This means that unlike other designs,
the user is able to determine that the engagement of the seal on the inner cable bedding is
not too light and not too heavy, affording some level of control over the installation.

 Cable gland sealing application for Instrument Cables shall be installed to the followings:
Step 1:

a) The cable sealing is supplied along with the cable gland.

b) The cable gland and sealing compound are free issue from the main contractor
utilizing to use in Khurais Area Facilities Expansion & Satellite GOSP Project.

c) The silicone sealing is provided for submission of barrier cable glands.

d) The cable gland to be installed by competent skilled personnel.

e) Install the cable gland as per manufacturer recommendation and installation

instructions.

f) Segregate the wire for preparation of sealing application.

g) The chamber of the cable gland shall be clean before filling the sealing compound.

h) Chamber will be filled with sealing when cable gland is completely assembled and
the wires are terminated on designated terminal block as per approved Wiring
diagrams / ILD’s.
 Make sure sealant material has not expired.

 Inspection of cable gland has been completed prior to install of sealing. RFI to be
cover the activity and it is a HOLD Point for Contractor & Saudi Aramco.

 Make sure mix compound life has not expired.

MV CABLE SPLICING, GLANDING AND TERMINATION

A splice may be considered as two or more conductors joined with a suitable connector, reinsulated,
re-shielded and re-jacketed with compatible materials applied over a properly prepared surface.
Whenever possible, splicing is normally voided. However, splicing is often a necessity based on
manufacturer maximum cable length provision.

There can be many reasons for building splices such as:

1. The supplied length of cable is not sufficient to perform the intended job.
2. Cables damaged after installation
3. A tap into an existing cable

In all the above cases, the option is to either splice the cable or replace the entire length. The
economy of modern splicing products in many cases makes splicing an optimal choice, however any
splicing provision must be agreed with SAPMT prior to execution.

 SPLICING STEPS

The previously quoted definition accurately develops five common steps in building a splice:

1. Site Preparation
2. Splicing
3. Re-insulate
4. Re-shield
5. Re-jacket

1. Site Preparation

a. All approved documents and permits relevant on the activities shall be available on site.

b. Only experienced and qualified persons are allowed to perform cable splicing.

c. Ensure the working site is safe from any hazardous objects, chemical, etc.

2. Splicing

a. Prepare the cable to be splice as per COMPANY Standards and Manufacturer

Procedures.

b. Removed the outer jacket of the cable using electric knife to take out the metallic shield,
insulating shield, insulation and conductor.

c. Metallic shield, insulating shield, insulation and conductor will be cut and exposed the
required length base on the manufacture splicing procedure.

d. Ensure that the outer jacket, metallic shield, insulating shield, insulation and conductor
are properly cleaned before the splicing activities will start.

e. Connect the conductor using the suitable compression or crimp type connector for the
cables.

f. Metallic shield armour will be connected using the flexible wire mesh and metallic tape.

3. Re-insulate

a. Conductor shall be wrapping by appropriate electrical and rubber tape.

4. Re-shield

a. Metallic shield armour will be connected using the flexible wire mesh and metallic tape
and will be wrap by electrical tapes.

5. Re-jacket

a. Re-jacketing is accomplished using hot or cold shrinkable tube, or other manufacture

approved method or procedures, approved by SAPMT and operations.
