Research Title: TEACHERS’ COMPETENCIES AND FACTORS AFFECTING THE


PERFORMANCE IN TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

A paramount factor in the teaching learning system is the teacher. Physical education is
concerned with the teaching of skills, acquisition of knowledge and development of attitudes
through movement. Teachers competence is one aspect that affecting the educational quality in
many countries over the world. Teacher competence was affected by some factors. These
factors including teacher creativity, teacher interest, teacher attitude, teacher motivation to
work, and motivation to achieve, principal leadership, school culture, compensation, job
satisfaction, and school facilities. In teaching Physical Education a teachers’ competencies also
affected by these factors.

The main purpose and objectives of this study was to find the factors that affect teachers’
competencies in teaching physical education in selected schools in the Municipality of Carmen,
North Cotabato. It will possibly aim to determine the teaching competencies a teacher should
possess to cater efficient and effective teaching. Also, to find out the factors affecting the
competencies of teachers in teaching Physical Education, so that these factors can be taken care
of for better productivity in teaching learning process.

The main research questions in this study are the following: (1) Which are the most important
qualities of a teacher? (2) Can we group them under different categories of Competency? (3)
What perception do teachers have regarding the teaching competencies? (4) Is there any
factors affects on the teaching competencies in teaching physical education? (5) Which are the
factors that affect the performance of a teacher? 6) Which are the factors that affect the
competencies of a teacher?

This study will use descriptive survey design to investigate the teachers’ competencies and
factors affecting the performance of teachers in teaching physical education. This design was
relevant to this study because it is ideal for gathering information regarding peoples’ feelings
and opinions about educational issues (Kombo & Tromp, 2006). This design is also appropriate
for this study because the survey method is widely used to obtain data. Observation and tools to
be used in this study will be based on the seven books/journals/research identified by me as my
primary guide in conducting this study in the future.
