INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As eloquently stated by Çetinkaya, (2009) that teachers have major role in

developing materials for learning, framing learning process and determining interests and

competence of learners, they are the turning point of the education. As stated by Ndegwa

(2004), Primary teachers’ attitudes and practices are a widely discussed subject.

According to her the subject has been examined from different perspectives, such as,

economic, social, educational, psychological, and in early childhood studies. For example,

one of the studies reviewed, examined primary school teachers’ attitudes towards child-

centered and teacher-centered teaching methods. She found that primary-school teachers

preferred to use teacher-centered approaches. This paper particularly looks at the

variables of professional training and the teacher’s attitude, as well as the teacher’s

teaching experience and the teacher’s attitude.

Teachers’ attitude

Teachers’ attitudes, not only towards physical education, but also towards teaching

of physical education are important because there is a substantial relationship between

teachers’ attitudes towards teaching physical education and their practice in teaching

physical education.

3
Bucher (2003), mentioned that in a study on teachers’ attitudes, have revealed that

a teachers’ attitudes play a crucial role in ensuring that students have certain experience

of physical activity in teaching physical education in school settings.

Bhargava and Pathy (N.D) states that Studies on attitude reveal that teacher’s

efficiency and classroom performance are based on her attitude towards profession up to

a large extent. Most of the studies have highlighted the gender of teacher, academic

achievement, and job satisfaction as the factors influencing attitude towards profession.

The present study is an effort to unveil the attitudes of teachers in teaching physical

education.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Expectation of the government, stakeholders and parents is that primary teachers

should have impose a positive attitude towards teaching specifically in Physical Education

assuming that teaching is their career by choice, they took time to train because they like

it and they enjoy teaching primary students. This expectations conflicts with reality. Some

of the primary teachers do not take their work seriously that is based on the study of

Branyon, (2002); Ndegwa, (2004); and Ng’asike, (2004).

Hickson & Fishburne (2004), States that the importance of instruction in physical

education in elementary schools cannot be exaggerated. Primary schools play a

substantial part in valuing the idea of a vital lifestyle and developing a culture where

physical activity tolerated as an enjoyable and embracing feature of daily life. Physical

Education remained a big challenge in implementing in public schools. Oftentimes, as a

4
subject, Physical Education has not been seriously taken as how it deserves. There is

fright that Physical Education lessons are being administered without even supervising by

the teacher that makes the Physical Education lessons aimless. In different cases, most

lessons have been used by most teachers usually uses these lessons to cope syllabi in

other subjects and to remedy some works. Besides, considering that PE is the

cornerstone of sports and cultural exertions. It was, therefore, essential to explore the

needs to effectively implement Physical Education in public primary schools. Hence the

need for this study, to find out teachers’ attitudes towards teaching physical education.

Research Questions

The general objective of the study, therefore, was to find out teachers’ attitudes

towards teaching physical education. Specifically, the study’s objectives were to

investigate the following:

1. What are the socio-demographic profile of teachers in terms of:

a. Years in Teaching

b. Teaching Position

c. Relevant trainings attended

d. Highest educational attainment

2. what are the attitudes of teachers when it comes to teaching Physical Education

Scope and Limitation of the Study

5
This study will focus only on unveiling teachers’ attitudes towards teaching physical

education. The participants are the selected elementary teachers in selected elementary

school in Carmen, North Cotabato in the year 2021.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study would be of considerable importance to the following:

Through the result of this study, the heads of the school would be aware of the attitudes

of their teachers when it comes to teaching physical education. As heads of the school,

they would be guided in maintaining or improving the teachers’ attitude. Thus, with the

study, they would find that their teachers are lacking or equipped with the necessary

attitudes. Expectedly, they would take necessary steps to address the problem, if there is

any.

Further, given the result of the study, teachers would have a total view as to what

are their attitudes towards teaching specifically in Physical Education.

Finally, this study may be used by future researchers who wish to replicate the

study on other place of interest and may add teachers’ attitude towards teaching physical

education

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This study entitled: Unveiling teachers’ attitude towards teaching physical

education among the elementary teachers in selected schools in the Municipality of

Carmen, Cotabato. The key purpose of this study is to unveil the attitude of teachers in

teaching physical education.

The following literature related to this study will describe the essential information

on teachers’ attitude in teaching physical education. The previous study will also support

the ideas in this research study.

According to Devi (2005) accomplishment in teaching field depends upon two

prime factors those are Attitude towards profession and job satisfaction. Suja (2007) also

confirmed similar findings. According to him, attitude regarding profession, interest in

profession and teaching experience influence job commitment of the teacher. Mathai

(1992) in his study emphasized that attitude towards profession and success in teaching

are correlated to each other. In another study, Cornelius (2000) revealed that intelligence,

attitude towards teaching and academic achievement of teacher trainee cast impression

on their competence. Gynanduru and Kumar (2007) established that over achievers and

average achievers possess more advantageous attitude towards teaching in comparison

to under achievers. Pushpam (2003) confirmed positive relationship between women

teachers’ attitude towards teaching and job environment.

7
Teachers’ attitude

Teachers’ attitudes, not only towards physical education, but also towards teaching

of physical education are important because there is a substantial relationship between

teachers’ attitudes towards teaching physical education and their practice in teaching

physical education.

Bucher (2003), mentioned that in a study on teachers’ attitudes, have revealed that

a teachers’ attitudes play a crucial role in ensuring that students have certain experience

of physical activity in teaching physical education in school settings.

Bhargava and Pathy (N.D) states that Studies on attitude reveal that teacher’s

effectiveness and classroom accomplishment are based on her attitude towards teaching

up to a great realm. Most of the studies have stressed the gender of teacher, academic

achievement, and job satisfaction as the factors influencing attitude towards teaching. The

present study is an effort to unveil the attitudes of teachers in teaching physical education.

Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Physical Education

According to Petty & Cacioppo, (1986), attitudes are defined as global

assessments of people, objects, and issues. Jeong & Block, (2011) mentioned Teachers’

attitudes are the top-of-the-line contributor to their aspirations to teach physical education.

Teachers who hold positive attitudes towards teaching PE are more likely to believe that

teaching PE is important, and thus will have greater intentions to teach PE (Jeong &

8
Block, 2011). Triandis, (1971), added that attitudes can also be characterized by the

emotions that individuals relate to a set of actions expressed through a teacher’s degree

of favour or disfavour of teaching PE (Doulkeridou et al., 2011).

Lewis (2014) conducted a study about the teachers' attitudes towards practicing

physical

education. The results showed that teachers are more comfortable with students who

practice dphysical exertions differently. In other words, teachers observe that students,

after practicing physical activities, have more self-esteem, more regard to their

classmates, better classroom administration, strong social affiliation, and high self-

encouragement to do classroom activities and projects.

Factors which Influence Teachers' Attitudes toward Physical Education

Teacher Qualifications. The basic requirements needed by the hiring institutes of

education is the teachers’ qualifications. According to Alter & Coggshall, (2009) before a

teachers could be hired in public schools he will be require to finish a Bachelors degree.

As studied by Blomeke & Delaney, (2012) this is because certified teachers can make

more progress in teaching their students.

Curriculum. The curriculum is considered the foundation or cornerstone in any

educational institution. Having a strong and well-planned curriculum will positively impact

students' achievement academically, socially, and culturally.

Students' Attitudes Toward Physical Education

9
Rikard and Bandvill (2006) discussed that attitudes, beliefs and behaviors are

connected

together and can be complementary concepts. This means that attitudes are derived from

beliefs

and shape our behaviors in different ways and direct our involvement in activities.

10
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The study will focus on determining the attitudes of teachers teaching Physical

Education in Elementary Schools in Carmen, Cotabato.

The schematic presentation of the study as shown in Figure 1 consists of the

independent and dependent variables. The socio-demographic profile of the

respondents and the attitudes of teachers in teaching physical education will serve as

the Independent Variable (IV) in this study.

Unveiling the teachers’ attitudes towards teaching physical education is the

dependent variable (DV) in this study

METHODOLOGY

This chapter covers presentation of the research design, research participants taken for

this study, research instruments adopted to be employed in this study, sampling

procedure, data gathering procedure followed and statistical treatment used this study.

Research Design

In this study a qualitative design was used, allowing the researcher to get an in-

depth understanding of the attitudes of teachers in teaching physical education.

Data Gathering Devices

Prior to data gathering, the researcher prepared an informed consent letter to be

given to the respondents of the study, voluntary participation was highly emphasized in

the letter of consent. The primary tool to be used in gathering data was in a form of a

one on one interview with the respondents. The interview will focus on the

determining the teachers’ attitude towards teaching physical education.

Research Process

The research procedure will be done in a form of one-to-one interview in which

the researcher took written notes. All interviews were tape recorded. The interviews

were informal and open ended and carried out in a conversational style.

13
Sampling Procedure

In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling in which the researcher

chose only elementary teachers. Purposive sampling is intentional selection of

informants based on their ability to elucidate a specific theme, concept, or phenomenon

(Schutt, 2006)..
