Field drilling and workovers were possibly conducted
with about 20 rigs, mostly in the Hassi R'Mel and Hassi
Messaoud fields. Sonatrach was the only operator active,
as in 1986.
Crude oil production averaged an estimated 660,000
b/d, slightly lower than the revised average of 674,000
b/d in 1986. Condensate output averaged some 400,000
b/d compared with 370,000 b/d (revised estimate) in
1986. Enhanced recovery programs were underway in 15
oil fields, including Hassi Messaoud.
Gross gas production was about 10,219,000 mcf/day,
a sizeable increase from the 8,700,000 mcf/day in 1986.
About 70% of the gross output is flared or reinjected. Of
the remaining 30%, about 890,000 mcf/day is for domes-
tic consumption, 880,000 mcf/day is exported through
the Transmed pipehne, and 1,340,000 mcf/day is used
for LNG production and exported. Exports are planned
to rise to about 3,000,000 mcf/day in 1988 as supply con-
tracts with a number of new customers were signed or

At the end of 1987, proved reserves amounted to 8.8
billion bbl of oil and 126.8 tcf of gas.
EGYPT (Figure 2; Tables 6-12)
The Egyptian parliament ratified a gas clause amend-
ment giving foreign companies significant incentives to
explore for natural gas. Britoil, Conoco, lEOC, Unocal,
and Shell signed contract amendments for blocks in the
Western Desert, Nile delta, and Gulf of Suez. During the
year, EGPC opened for bidding 4 Gulf of Suez areas,
with a closing date of March 31,1988, and 6 blocks in the
Nile delta, with a deadline of September 15,1988.
On December 31,1987, a total of 155,994 km^ was held
by 54 companies or groups, compared with the revised
125,407 km^ held by 58 interests at the end of 1986. Eight
groups were granted preliminary exploration rights over
43,776 km^ in the Western Desert: Amoco, Arco,
Conoco/Phoenix, lEOC, Norsk Hydro et al, Phoenix,
Phillips, and Shell. Five companies received final
approval for 8 exploration blocks: 2 awards in the West-
ern Desert, 1 on the northeast bank of the Gulf of Suez,
and 5 offshore in the same area. In the Gulf of Suez, pro-
duction rights were granted to Gupco in the central part
and Nordapetco in the northern part. Relinquishments
and compulsory area reductions took place in various
onshore and offshore areas and amounted to 14,696 km^

recorded in about 37 party-months, a 43% decUne from
12,498 line-km and 37.7 party-months in 1986. More
than 80% of the activity was carried out onshore by 9
operators, mainly in the Western Desert. Contractors
were Geosource and Western Geophysical. Offshore,
limited work was conducted over the Nile delta and Gulf
of Suez blocks by 3 operators using CGG, Fairfield, and
Western crews.
Exploratory drilling declined in 1987 with 159,145 m
(down 22%) drilled in 135.6 rig-months (down 31%)
compared with 205,142 m and 208.2 rig-months in 1986.
Activity centered on the usual plays in the Western Desert

and Ciultdf Suez. Of 55 wells drilled, 14 were discoveries:
11 oil and 6 gas. In the Western Desert, Bapetco's Badr el
Din 12-1 and Badr el Din 13-1 were suspended as oil dis-
coveries. Khalda (Conoco) tested 4,160 b/d of 47° oil
and 12,500 MCFGD from the Jurassic at Amoun B-2,
25,000 MCFGD and 3,156 BCPD through a 1-in. choke
at Tarek 1, and an aggregate 8,940 b/d of 44°oil and
13,600 MCFGD at Yasser 1. All these discoveries were in
the Khalda permit. Wepco reported a discovery in its
Fereiha 1 wildcat. In the Eastern Desert, Marathon
struck oil in Gazwarina 1, whereas in the northern Sinai,
GPC abandoned Ra'ad 1 as a noncommercial gas discov-
ery. Offshore, in the Gulf of Suez, Miocene discoveries
were made by Conoco at Hareed 1 (gas and condensate),
Gupco at Ghara South 377-1 (oil), lEOC at Ashrafi 404-
Bl and Ashrafi 404-B2X (oil), and Petrobel at Sinai 1
(recoverable reserves estimated at 20 million bbl). Tex-
aco's Gharib East B-1 tested 2,190 BOPD in the Eocene
Thebes Formation.
In 1987, development drilling amounted to 75 wells
and 193,817 m drilled, down from273,831 m and 84 wells
in 1986. Again, most of the activity was onshore in the
Western Desert and Eastern Desert, where the 1987 level
of activity increased by 44% from 1986 in terms of the
number of wells drilled. Offshore, activity was markedly
lower in 1987: 25 wells completed versus 57 in 1986.
Production reached record highs in 1987 with averages
of 896,000 BOPD, 608,080 MCFGD, and 17,980 BCPD
(up, respectively, 12.6%, 10.7%, and 16.9% from 1986).
One offshore and 13 onshore oil fields went on-stream,
adding some 13,500 b/d to the country's output.
LIBYA (Figures 3, 4; Tables 13-16)
The demarcation agreement delineating the offshore
boundary between Libya and Malta was ratified on
December 11, 1987, and the problem related to the con-
cession allocation in the disputed area was settled. The
government also actively negotiated settlements of long-
standing disputes with Mobil and Sun. The "standstill'
agreement with the other 5 United States companies,
which ceased operations in Libya upon request of the
United States government, continued in force. It was also
reported that the existing contract terms would be
changed to take current economic conditions into
account. The country is emerging as a prime exploration
target in North Africa, and several foreign companies
were reported to be seeking concessions.
The total acreage held under concession or exploration
and production-sharing agreements amounted to
434,005 km^ down 4% from the revised total acreage at
the end of 1986. Awards were made to Sirte Oil in the
Murzuk basin (NC 151) and in the north Sirte basin (NC
BOA; block rehnquished by Agoco in January 1987).
Renewals on reduced acreage were granted to Agip (NC
119)andDeminex(NC107).
In 1987, exploration decreased by 30% with 95.6
party-months compared to about 135 party-months
recorded in 1986. About 8 land crews contracted from
Agesco, Boco, Prakla, and SSL were active throughout

1987 for the state-controlled companies Agoco, Sirte Oil,
Mobil Libya, Waha Oil, and Zueitina Oil. Agip (SSL
crew) ran a 11.5 party-month survey in the Sirte basin.
The only offshore activity was north of Tripoli for Sirte
Oil. CGG's ship, Odysee, was used.
Exploratory drilling activity also decreased in 1987:
72.6 rig-months were spent in drilhng 74,037 m com-
pared with about 146 rig-months and 108,200 m (revised)
drilled in 1986. No offshore activity was reported.
Onshore, most of the successful wildcats were drilled in
the Sirte basin. Sirte Oil had an oil and gas discovery
(1,013 BOPD and 28,400 MCFGD) in Paleozoic elastics
at Kl-NC-149. Waha Oil made the 5X-1-59 oil discovery
west of Giallo field, suspended II-1-32 west of Dahara
field after testing 1,702 b/d of 47° oil through a V4-in.
choke and, north of the Bahi field, KK-1-32 was sus-
pended as an oil and gas discovery. Zueitina tested 1,000
b/d of 42 °oil through a V2-in. choke in the T-1-103 wild-
cat, located between Intisar A and Intisar B oil fields. In
the Ghadames basin, Agoco tested oil in the Silurian
Agacus Formation at F-1-NC2, and completed the well in
early 1988.
Sixteen development wells were drilled in 1987 in a
total of 46.1 rig-months, all in the Sirte basin, compared
with about 14 wells in 46 rig-months in 1986. Operators
active onshore were Agoco, Agip, Mobil Libya, Sirte,
Waha, Wintershall, and Zueitina. In November, develop-
ment drilhng started at Agip's giant Bouri field, the larg-
est in the Mediterranean, with recoverable reserves
estimated at 0.5 bilHon bbl.
No official production figures were released. It is esti-
mated that output averaged 947,000 BOPD and
1,000,000 MCFGD in 1987.
During 1987, exploratory drilling activity continued at
a slightly lower level, with 15,160 m drilled in 21.5 rig-
months compared with 16,377 m and 23.9 rig-months in
1986. Apex made a marginal gas discovery, Ouled Merah
(OML) 9, in the Rharb-Prerif clastic pays of the "Nappe
Prerifaine." Elsewhere, Onarep abandoned 3 dusters,
and Esso, Pennzoil, and SCP each abandoned 1 wildcat.
No development drilling activity was reported in either
1987 or 1986.
Production averaged about 300 BOPD and 6,000
MCFGD in 1987 compared with 400 BOPD and 8,500
MCFGD in 1986.
SUDAN (Figure 6; Tables 22-23)
No significant developments occurred in 1987. Acre-
age under license probably was unchanged, and only very
limited surface exploration and drilling was carried out.
In the Nile block. Sun abandoned in July its fourth wild-
cat, EI Democratia 1, as an encouraging noncommercial
oil discovery, and resumed detailed Vibroseis surveying
in the same area in late 1987. Elsewhere, Chevron may
start drilling in late 1988.
In early 1988, Panoco was awarded the offshore
Suakin permit, which includes Chevron's Suakin gas and
condensate discovery (estimated reserves: 1 tcf ofgasand
100 million bbl of condensate). Persistent rumors men-
tion several companies negotiating for acreage in north-
ern Sudan.
TUNISIA (Figure 7; Tables 24-29)

On December 31, 1987, 89,626 km^ were held in Tuni-

sia, a slight increase from the revised 87,244 km'^ held at

resulting in about 47,500 m of hole drilled in 34 rig-
months (24,000 m and 18.9 rig-months in 1986). In the
onshore Ghadames basin, Agip made an oil find at
Zemlet et Taiara E-2 (750 BOPD from the Silurian Aca-
cus Formation), and Marathon successfully confirmed
the Pelagian basin Ezzaouia discovery (well 2 tested
10,465 BOPD and 2,477 MCFGD). Four other wells were
abandoned. Off the Pelagian basin, an oil discovery was
reported by Agip at Maamoura 1, followed by the suc-
cessful confirmation well, Maamoura E-1, suspended at
the beginning of 1988 after testing 2,880 b/d of 37° oil
and 21,560 MCFGD. Six other wells were dusters.
In 1987, development drilling activity was lower than
in 1986, resulting in nearly 24,000 m drilled in 19.8
months compared with about 28,000 m and 23 rig-
months spent on location in 1986. About 70% of the
activity was conducted in Sitep's and CFTP's onshore El
Borma and Sidi Itayem fields; offshore, the only field
developed was Elf's Ashtart.
In 1987, crude production fell 5% from 1986 to an
average 104,000 BOPD. Marketed natural gas averaged
36,400 MCFGD, down 10% from 1986.
