My one of the favourite books is “The boy in the Striped Pyjamas”.

It was written by Irish novelist John

Boyne. It is a novel and a fictional tale. The action takes place in the countryside near Auschwitz. The main
characters are nine-year-old Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant, and Shmuel, Jewish concentration
camp inmate.

The book tells the story of two boys whose friendship is impossible. One day Bruno’s family have to
leave their house in Berlin. A boy is annoyed because he has to leave all his friends and he would have no
one to play with in their new house. The new house is not very nice, but there’s something out of Bruno’s
bedroom window, something on the other side of the fence: he can see some soldiers, who are laughing
and having fun, and many children, who are all standing close together with their heads facing the floor. All
of them have something in common: they all seem to wear the same striped pyjamas. Throughout the
story, one fine day a nine-year-old decides to explore that area. He identifies another boy of his age on the
other side named Shmuel. They become good friends and every afternoon they meet, they sit down and
talk. Bruno doesn’t know that Shmuel is a prisoner of the concentration camp. The boy wants to keep the
friendship secret. Everyday Bruno brings Shmuel some food knowing that if Bruno was caught, he would be
in a serious trouble.

I will not give away the ending, but Bruno does something that no one will ever forget. I can guarantee
you’ll love it.

What I really liked about this book is that the story is a thought provoking and gripping. I would
recommend this book for those who already have some knowledge of Holocaust. There is a film written and
directed based on the same book, but reading the book is better because the plot is described in more
details.
