The following method statement refers to the steps and procedures involved in the demolition of existing
structures, tree cutting and clearing & grubbing, as described in Section 200.
Details of the flow of work, measurement control, man power and equipment involved during these activities
have been discussed below. Safety precautions and environmental management plan would be also
assessed based on the main contractors Safety Plan and Environmental Management Plan to carry out the
stated earthwork activities.

3.0 METHODOLOGY
Appendix A – Construction Flowchart illustrates the construction workflow that is to take place in order to
effectively carryout the removal of structures & trees and the clearing & grubbing.
Once the Right of Way (ROW) has been confirmed, and the final site survey and disposal plan has been
approved, the contractor is to move forward with the clearing and grubbing process.
Any form of structure requested by the Client and/or the Engineer is to be removed with care.
All the structures that lie within the design confinement of the road being constructed should be
removed.
A joint tree survey alongside the resident engineer is to be carried out and the trees are to be marked
depending on their girth 1m above the ground.
Any tree with girth less than 300mm is to be classed as clearing and grubbing material.
The marked trees are to be cut down and the useful cuts are to be transported and stockpiled.

Demolition of Existing Structures, Tree Cutting and Clearing & Grubbing Method Statement No. 001
Once the marked trees have been cut and existing structures removed, the clearing and grubbing
activities will take place.
Any stump or solid object that is 75mm or less from the ground level can be left undisturbed as long
as it lies outside the excavation and embankment areas.
All stumps more than 1m below the subgrade and embankment slopes are to be disregarded as well.
The rest should be cut flush or below the final slope line.
All topsoil is expected to be removed to an average depth of 200mm over any embankment fill
section.
All disposal material and debris is to be buried at the designated location, with 300mm of cover
material in order to mitigate the risk of fires.
The entire process will be regarded as complete once the final inspection has been done and the Engineer
gives the approval to move forward with the project.
The following management plan is taken in accordance with the ‘Manual on Traffic Control Devices’ issued by
the RDA.
The utilization of proper traffic signs, barricade tapes and boards and traffic cones are to be placed in
locations where the road width is reduced to the work in progress.
The speed limits should be reduced on roads close to cleaning and grubbing works.
The deployment of flagmen in key areas (such as junctions) where larger volumes or traffic (greater
activity) is expected.
The flagmen and workers are to be provided with reflective jackets, light battens and walkie-talkies in
order ensure a safer working environment.
Diversion routs are to be clearly illustrated in areas where the movement of vehicles seems
impractical.

Safety management is to be implemented as per Main contractor’s requirement and Method Statement
approved by the main contractor. All necessary precautions are to be taken in order to avoid any form of
accidents and/or damage with regard to site workers and/or adjoining properties.
Everyone on site is expected to wear their safety helmets and steel toe cap shoes, and depending on the task
at hand, gloved and/or safety glasses are to be worn.
An on-site first aid kit as well as a standby vehicle is to be parked in the vicinity in case an accident needs to
be tended to.
Appendix B- Payment Items extracted from BOQ aids in illustrating the breakdown of some of the major
costs/payments incurred during the three stages discussed above. However, it is important to recognize that
the rates are subject to change as the project progresses. As stated before, trees with a girth less than
300mm would be removed during cleaning and grubbing process and only the requested structures would be
carefully extracted.
All timber cuts would be returned to the property owner or the relevant government authority, as directed by
the Engineer. The Contractor will not be permitted to claim any of the materials.
